Wigan Warriors confirm injury timeline for 2024 ever-present

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors have lost one of their star players and a 2024 ever-present to injury with the extent now revealed by head coach Matt Peet.

The Good Friday derby win over St Helens saw them earn two points but also pick up two injuries, one which looks more costly than the other.

Wigan won 24-14 as they held off any threat of a St Helens comeback and also scored a late try to secure the spoils but they lost one forward pre-match and one during the game

Prop forward Tyler Dupree failed a HIA which means he automatically misses Sunday’s game against Hull FC, whilst Patrick Mago pulled up in the warm-up and the extent of his injury has now been confirmed by Matt Peet.

The 30-year-old forward played in every single game of Wigan’s incredible 2024 campaign where they won every single piece of silverware available, with the New Zealand-born forward the only man to play all 34 games.

Having missed two games already this season (Round Four and Round Eight), Mago now looks set to miss another four with Matt Peet confirming that there is an expected four-week recovery time for the forward.

Speaking to the press ahead of Wigan’s game on Sunday against Hull FC, Peet explained: “We lost Patrick to a tweaked hamstring in the warm up – it will be about four weeks.”

One of those four weeks will be a bye with Wigan having already been knocked out of the Challenge Cup, falling in the Round of 16 at the hands of Sunday’s opponent Hull FC.

However, Mago will be a massive blow whilst out with his impact off the interchange bench proving pivotal in plenty of key games last season. The most obvious example would be the Round 25 win over Hull KR when he entered the field and played just 15 minutes but completely changes the momentum of the game.

That win helped ensure Wigan won the League Leaders Shield and proved just how valuable the former NRL man is to the Cherry and Whites. Another example of his importance was the club extending his deal midway through last season, tying him down until the end of 2026 with a year option for 2027 in the club’s favour.

Wigan currently have somewhat of a crisis in their forward pack with Ethan Havard having missed most of the season, Luke Thompson out for a few more weeks, Dupree failing his HIA and now Mago sidelined.

Both Tiaki Chan and Harvey Makin are out on loan with Salford Red Devils meaning Liam Byrne, Sam Walters and Harvie Hill are the only recognised senior props, with Walters only just transitioning to that position this year.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
