Almost implies the club had made an offer that said something like, "we'll sign you for three years, but for the first year you'll have to play for free because we're at our salary cap limit. However, by releasing more players we will have money next year and the year after so we'll pay your first year's salary mixed in with those other two years". I know that's not really playing for free, but it could be seen that he'd have no income for the first few months of his contract, if my completely made-up guesswork is correct.
It is your made up scenario that had crossed my mind given what the OP wrote.
Given Radlinski is playing for free I was wondering if Wigan had asked Newton to come back for the remainder of this season for free but with a paying contract for the seasons after.
God only knows what opposition fans would make of that if it came off! They accuse us of paying too much breaking the salary cap but if we had internationals signing for us to play for free I think they would have a fit.

Apparently Newton was quoted as saying: “If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.â€Â
