Abuse me if you want but, you dont have the best fans in RL. The best fans i came across this season were teams such as Gateshead, Hunslet, Swinton. Not saying you arent loyal supporters, but the best supporters is a bit OTT.

Expecting abuse now

I understand what your saying Chris. However, there are similar groups within every club. If Wigan were in Gateshead position you would have a hardcore of absolutely devoted supporters. I think the Blackpool fans take some beating given they have been forced to follow their club as they moved from pillar to post around the North West.

Why bother resurrecting a post from three months ago, then?

Is there really any such thing as the "best" supporters, anyway? These arguments just go round in circles - it's so subjective. You say
you dont have the best fans in RL. The best fans i came across this season were...
Well, exactly. Based on your own experience this season, it's fans from the stated clubs, because you actually met them and got an idea of what they're like. Did you come to Wigan? If not, on what are you basing your judgement of where we sit in this imaginery league table of fans? Subjective, see - a pointless argument IMO.

I would say, without any claim to being the best, that any club that has a 14,500 average gate in what looked for most of it like a relegation year certainly has some loyal supporters. And if you had been to the JJB and experienced the atmosphere you would know that the vast majority of those had certainly come to support their team to the hilt.

If you are going to be picky an average attendance of 969ish for a nl2 team who has struggled on and off the pitch since the switch to summer and only just surviving a couple of seasons ago isnt too bad. Just to let you know we deserve to be where we are and a hardcore group of us are trying and have been trying to raise valuable funds for the club.

I actually think you have a great support base, stadia and set up, aswell as a good younger set up.

You resurected a thread from three mosnths ago and you were asked why. The previous post to yours in this thread was dated:

posted on Sat, 15 Jul 2006 at 10:01

The next one after that is yours dated:

posted on Wed, 18 Oct 2006 at 12:48

So unless you posted a topic with the exact same title of "Re: Great attendence once ..." including the spelling mistake (!) and the three dots at the end it is very strange.

Of course reading your post it is quite clear you were contradicting the opinion in the previous post of 15 Jul 2006.

This game needs every supporter it can get. It matters not who they follow, where they come from. I feel very fortunate to be born and live in Wigan where the game has such strong roots. Many are not so lucky.

Looking at Fev. They may not be a SL club but I think the % of the Fev population who support them is fairly healthy compared to many clubs. Fev, Cas, Wakey will never be Leeds but that does not mean they are any less important.

Oh and after upsetting most of Yoprkshire. I once attended a lecture by a Sheffield UNiv Urban Planning Professor who desribed Sheffields ambition to overtake Leeds as the principal city in Yorkshire as pissing in the wind :) It's just a fact Leeds is a boom city and will always be the driving force of Yorkshire in so many ways.

You don't have to be born somewehere to support a team. It is more often the case in RL but there are plenty of supportes born outside Wigan who support Wigan.

I am afraid in the era of SL and the professional games sides that can't raise a support of sufficient number are deemed less important.
