The worst ref's call was for a Leeds penalty when Kylie Leuluai simply dropped the ball. We would have kicked that easily for 18-18.

Generally I am annoyed at the number of penalties we see these days and this must be down to the man controlling (or otherwise) the game. Either that or all of the teams in Superleague have decided to throw discipline out of the window. :conf:

Not for the first time I say full time refs have had a detrimental effect - it's as if they now believe they have to be more involved when really they should be trying to be invisible.

I don't think they have and I think the increase in penalties is down to more being given for technical offences such as not being square at the PTB and incorrect PTB's for example. They also seem a lot more fussed about the scrums these days as well.

The trouble is not only does this seem to be leading to more penalties but it also has IMO led to more inconsistency as they don't pick up every incorrect PTB for example and this can't be excused as the refs just being human and fallible.

I think with the Leeds game Silverwood lost the plot in the first half. There were lots of high shots going in and I don't think he controlled the game well at all. I think it is significant the two sin binning's were for technical offences yet the high shots went largely unpunished in terms of sanctions against the players. I think it was Bailey who hit Fielden high and that was as a clear a sending off offence as you are likely to see IMO.

I was never a fan of Karl Kirkpatrick but in a sort of parting shot interview I read somewhere he has a go at the number of penalties being given these days and says he was proud to only give 6 in his last GF appearance. His attitude was (he says) to penalise the blatant offences and give the benefit of the doubt to the other less obvious technical infringements. He also quoted Mo when he said "We are in the entertainment business" meaning the game was the entertainment not the ref as he also thinks the refs are not invisible enough since going full time.
