My late father was a great fan of Punchy Standoff. He once told me a story of how Punchy would dive at speed and launch himself at players trying to score in the corner. On one occasion (rare) he missed and hit the permiter wall at speed. Punch just got straight back up.

Lydon ..for me was capable(if bothered) of doing things the others could not, put him behind a team playing well and he was the icing on the cake his challenge cup performance against Halifax was attack at it's best.

Rads.. Wigan through and through so many great moments both in attack and defence again the Chalenge cup performance was his most memorable , backs against the wall the old enemy and playing injured saving us three times that I can remember on his own maybe not as talented as Joe but made up for it in effort.

Hampson ..Not sure who we played although I think it was York at Central park ? This scrawny full back was a breath of fresh air, for a start he could catch the ball which the last incumbents of the shirt seamed to have an alarming inability to , not just that he leapt like the proverbial Salmon in doing so , secondly the guy was fearless running the ball back ,he seemed to bump off tackles at will , what a find he was , I was sickened when he broke his leg stopping Fairburn , a string of untimely injuries followed so even though he was a good full back I think he could have been great . The best moment for me was in the closing stages of the World club challenge against Manly
''Rambo Ronnie Gibbs'' seemingly unstoppable 5m out then Hampo just hit him with every little ounce of his body that tackle will live with me for ever the defining moment of the game which in turn is the most memorable one watching Wigan .
I hope to see more great full backs at Wigan ones who can honour and deserve the 1 shirt as ones above .

Good stuff Lucky. What I always admired about Hampo was he never let the injuries get him down but over his career he developed his own game and got better and better.

He had some freakish moves. If somebody chipped or grubbered through he would time his pick up and as he took the ball side/forward roll almost clear of the on coming player. Likewise when he ran it out he would almost bounce back up from would be tackler when he went on their outside and handed them off.

I remember all those moves, they where great!

Yes he was great to watch and he was the best at taking kicks without doubt .
He did recover from injuries the Tackle on Gibbs was on the back of two broken legs and a broken arm , he was fearless and that proved it. The Aussies thought Gibbs was hard so when he got the ball at full speed and into a gap it was a try .......NO . I think if someone had said look Hampo if you make this tackle it's the last thing you will do on a rugby field he would have hit even harder he was that way out . I was stood on the kop rite next to that tackle it shook Gibbs to the bone .
Whats funny he came over to play with Cas a few years later and was running into a gap when was introduced to the slight in stature Ged Burne he did not get up from what was a perfectly legal tackle but such was ''RAMBOS''
reputation the ref sent Ged off?? the ref thinking this little window cleaner must have done something illegal .
Dont think he ran down the left side of Central Park again old Ronnie his balls are buried somewhere under the third checkout at Tescos

Especially for his performance in the 2002 grand final! What a player, best defensive full back i have seen and one of the best attacking full backs! How we could do with him now? (not having a dig at mathers)
