I too went to Winstanley College. I was in the same form group as Ganson. Our form tutor was a woman that did typing/business on the upper floor near to the staff room. Ganson did not do sufficiently well at secondary level. In this era, Winstanley's A Level requirements were 5 A - C s. However, the college ran a small course called certificate of pre vocational education (CPVE). Ganson enrolled and completed that course. Thereafter to my knowledge which is not good beyond Winstanley he got a job as a cashier with the Bradford and Bingley in Wigan.

Rugby League. Winstanley then had quite a few Haydock etc students, students from towards St Helens. They had a fairly decent RL team although they seemed to play fat more Union than anything. Paul Darbyshire who played for St Pats and then Warrington was probably the best player. A couple of lads played for Wigan Colts and a year later Brendan Barr came along.

Ganson told everybody he played for St Helens Colts but never played for the college etc Odd given their was a free tour to Portugal on the horizon for decent rugby players. He eventually turned up to a training session after much baiting and could not even catch a ball. He thereafter never attended a training session.

He was thoroughly disliked and my abiding memory is that at any match with a team remotely close somebody from the opposition would say does that ~anker Ganson go to your college, when they were told he did it would be if I ever see him he is going to get his head kicked in which suggests he was far more annoying out of college. At Winstanley he just used to be loud because at the time he was on a loser because Wigan were totally dominant at that time and you could get him to virtually cry with frustration. I know he was a loner / billy no mates at Winstanley which was od because the Haydock / St Helens lads were all very close and stuck together as a group.

CP - good to see you are posting again. With a bit of luck we can start discussing rugby again rather than reading some of the crap that has appeared of late!

Lets not get carried away; he posted because he was the one I had alluded to. If he had continued, he could probably have told you about his dad taking the piss out of Ganson whenever he went into the BBB. Am I right CPW?? :D

But the point is. Who was the 'hard B*****d Ragman is bragging about having attended college with??

Hardly bragging !

I was at college at the same time as him, that's all. He was never a mate, and I didn't know him particularly well. I just attended the same class as him and we talked a lot about rugby and had the odd bet.

When I've seen him playing rugby, he could take a bit of stick - just as well as some other posters have pointed out, he attracted quite a lot of stick.

The way he referees is entirely in keeping with the character I once knew slightly, that's all I'm saying

A couple of interesting but factually incorrect reports on gansons playing ability/college time. Correct he wasn't very good and didn't play first team very often. I actually recall him causing an all out brawl one of the few times he played 1st team. The opposition had a hooker who was a very good player but only had one arm. At the first scrum ganson shouts come on lads get stuck into this hooker he is Harmless !!!! As you can imagine it kicked off big time and I don't remember ganson being anywhere near the fight. However you can't crucify someone for not being a good player just cause he became a ref. Take him as you find him, he coulde either be real entertainment value on a night out or a pain in the arse who found trouble and then couldn't sort it out. (trust me I know as i saved him a number of times from a beating)
At the end of the day he has made a career and to be fair he has got to the top from mediocre rugby ability. Fair play to him i say!!!!!!!
