I too went to Winstanley College. I was in the same form group as Ganson. Our form tutor was a woman that did typing/business on the upper floor near to the staff room. Ganson did not do sufficiently well at secondary level. In this era, Winstanley's A Level requirements were 5 A - C s. However, the college ran a small course called certificate of pre vocational education (CPVE). Ganson enrolled and completed that course. Thereafter to my knowledge which is not good beyond Winstanley he got a job as a cashier with the Bradford and Bingley in Wigan.
Rugby League. Winstanley then had quite a few Haydock etc students, students from towards St Helens. They had a fairly decent RL team although they seemed to play fat more Union than anything. Paul Darbyshire who played for St Pats and then Warrington was probably the best player. A couple of lads played for Wigan Colts and a year later Brendan Barr came along.
Ganson told everybody he played for St Helens Colts but never played for the college etc Odd given their was a free tour to Portugal on the horizon for decent rugby players. He eventually turned up to a training session after much baiting and could not even catch a ball. He thereafter never attended a training session.
He was thoroughly disliked and my abiding memory is that at any match with a team remotely close somebody from the opposition would say does that ~anker Ganson go to your college, when they were told he did it would be if I ever see him he is going to get his head kicked in which suggests he was far more annoying out of college. At Winstanley he just used to be loud because at the time he was on a loser because Wigan were totally dominant at that time and you could get him to virtually cry with frustration. I know he was a loner / billy no mates at Winstanley which was od because the Haydock / St Helens lads were all very close and stuck together as a group.
