I have an urge to go to the Uncle Joes Emporium now. When you are in another part of the country do you go to a sweet stall and ask for Uncle Joes? I'm always doing that.

As touched on by others- the biggest problem for Wigan is the road infrastructure. Going West out of Wigan town centre at 5pm is a nightmare whether that's going down past Wigan pier and through the Saddle or via Poolstock Lane towards the M6 is mostly 10 mph gridlock. Takes me circa 15 mins in morning to go from Higher End > Town Centre, but takes me 40 mins in evening if I leave at 4:30pm. It is amazing the difference now the schools are finishing.
RE The Grand Arcade, the road system coming out of the car park and on to the bypass can get ridiculous as the traffic light system at the end of Library St seems to reset itself every couple of weeks (or is that the council tinkering?). During peak Xmas shopping time, it was taking people around 2 hrs to get off the car park and out on to the main road as the lights weren't set right. This even led to a punch up between 2 women! Great advert for the town- come to our flag ship shopping centre and spend more time in the car park than you actually did shopping!

Going through Ince towards Hindley, at any time of day is always a 'mare. You're lucky if you get to Hindley lights without stopping.

The traffic problem is mainly caused by the towns industrial heritage. Whatever way you want to get in to the town centre you have to cross over the canal or go under/over the railway on a single carriageway road.
Saying this, the traffic isn't helped by poor traffic signals. The traffic lights on Riverway and Northway have pedestrian crossing 10-20 metres before or after them. This severely slows down the traffic as the crossings do not appear to be integrated with the traffic lights. This means that 3 or 4 cars pass through the junction then have to immediately stop if someone is using the crossing thus stopping the traffic queue flowing freely through the lights. This results in tailbacks into the town at rush hour when the pedestrian crossings are being heavily used.
The traffic lights st Tesco also created massive tailbacks when the road through Standish was closed and all traffic was diverted up Greenough Street and up thru' Whelley. the same thing happened recently due to the Haigh Music Festival.

Wigan has a canal that actually links different places together unlike St Helens where the canal stops in the supermarket car park and is blocked in several other places. Also the Wigan locks are one of the wonders of the waterways.

It is quite brilliant but I had never thought of it, I had taken it for granted really. There is nothing better than walking to Rugby on a nice summer evening =)

I enjoy our canals... usually cycle to adlington then go through haigh, whelley and upto parbold on 'em... nice. The negative is going up parbold hill on the way home.
