here goes! being called a pie eater has got nothing to do with eating pies!!it actualy goes back two or three hundred years ago when wigan stayed loyal to the crown in the cromwell civill war. hence our logo ancient and loyal.wigan was a very strategic foot hold for cromwell and he batterd us twice to take it. the second time we fought him we got so badly bashed we ran away from the battle field. cromwell was supposed to have said dont chase them let them leave and forever eat hummble pie!! he them went on to lose the war. and for staying loyal we where given a royal coat of arms by king richard himself! here enduth the lesson people.!

Correct, Grinch. Very close to where Central Park used to be, in fact! I remember studying the "battle of Wigan Lane" at school (so very many years ago...)

I don't think the Coal miners of Leigh would endorse your version of a PIE-EATER!

I also heard that pie eaters comes from an old miners strike that the Wiganers were forced to break first - also leading to "eating humble pie".

there is a place in whelly called long shoot and a cannon was actualy placed there. and as the name suggests you could shoot a long way with it. there is a clinic there now that does vasectomies so maybe it should now be called blank shot!!!
