Talk about overeaction by the opening poster. I disagree with much of what you say and looking at the other posts I guess that most agree. However despite this I do think you acually make a couple of valid points which I will discuss.

We have not had a great performance yet this season and even in the last few weeks when we have been winning we have had some decent scorelines but they were against fairly mediocre teams. In these wins a few players have been fairly poor, Joel Tomkins, Charnley, McIlorum to name a few but they have kept their places because Maguire rarely changes a winning team unless it is to accomodate someone coming back from injury. Finch has been improving but is still a long way from the player that I was looking for and has done little to justify his place. Just because we are winning does not mean the team is playing well or the individual performances are that great.

You do make a valid point though regarding Maguire and his signings. I would like to say firstly that he has been fantastic for the club and has improved the team and the coaching structures no end. We were a shambles before an he has transformed us. However I gave Noble an awful lot of stick about the players he signed and his favourites never getting dropped and him making the Wigan youngsters the scapegoats after bad performances. Last season Maguire seemed like a breath of fresh air dropping the likes of Roberts, Feka, Phelps etc when they deserved it but they were never his players so to speak and he hadnt been at the club long enough to have favourites.

This season though I have seen a big difference in this approach. I for the life of me cannot see how Joel tomkins is still getting picked at centre and am fairly certain that Finch and Lima would have been dropped on occasion this season if they were not signed by Maguire from Melbourne. I can only really recall Farrell, Goulding and Charnley being dropped this season. 3 Wigan youngsters who maybe were rightly dropped after poor performances but there have been many others who have played just as bad, if not worse, and retained their places. In the Catalan game there were a lot of poor performances and I remember Carmont in particular being shocking defensively but Goulding was the only one dropped after playing half a game because of injury. Since then he has played 2 games at centre, and played fairly well against Crusaders and very well against Bradford. However on both occasions he has then lost his place for the next match so the talk of if you play well enough you will keep your place doesnt really apply to some. I am no great fan of Marsh at centre, mainly because I dont see him as a centre, but he possibly played his best game in his last match there when he was promptly dropped to accomodate Joel in the team and hasnt played since.

Wigan will struggle to win anything this season if they can't put a performance in for 80 minutes, which i my opinion hasn't happend this season.

Even when playing teams like Wakefield and Crusaders Wigan have looked far from their best, ok Wigan nilled Wakefield but in that game Wigan wasted so many changes with silly errors, similar at Crusaders.

There doesn't seem any fluidity in the team like there was last season and if Wigan are going to win anything they need to play well as a team for 80 minutes...and keep doing that for the rest of the season.

Oh My God, we have lost a game!
That's it, the season is officially over!
we've only got 12 games left to play and with a 2 point gap (with a game in hand) it will be nigh impossible to win anything this year.
Whilst sending Madge back, might as well get rid of lockers, sam and don't let Hock or Fielden back in the squad either.

All entitled to an opinion, but come on

Last time I looked we had just been on the longest winning run for a number of years. It is no disgrace to lose to that team away from home in June. I will wait until after our next 3 games before reading very much into this defeat. We're still very much in the mix despite the considerable distractions of MM leaving and the WCC. I'm enjoying the season and have high hopes. It will be good to get Fielden and Hock back. That will give us a great boost.

I'm in Monty at the mo and this is a stupid leading thread. We were outplayed in the middle by a very well organised Catalan team. Their first two tries came from offload/interference in the tackle which led to space opening up. Their third was just a normal try anyone could have scored.
We lacked ideas going forward Finch is crap and Lima doesn't gain metres going into a tackle. Hoffman and Hansen did ok. Big loss was Sam getting a knock he was limping for the last 20 mins. Just way it was Catalans were better on the day.

in all fairness, i think the loss is a good thing. It reminds the boys what it feels like to lose.

Let's bear in mind that we're coming up to a knockout game against Wire. I feel (and a Wire fan colleague of mine feels the same) that Wire may have forgotton what it feels like to lose...

Madge, Waney & The lads all want the 3 this year, and the odd loss here and there reminds them of the pain of losing and gives a bounce back to win the next games...

Yes, the team's been looking a little weaker this season than last season BUT, that is in comparison to other teams. Take the 2011 Wigan against the 2010 Superleague, and we'd be on top with a trail of dust behind us...

Settle down, and chill... the best is yet to come :-)
