Sam will be at Wigan for a very long time hopefully before this new contract I doubted he would stay longer than another season. It has been expensive, so fans need to remember that when saying sign X, Y and Z or that we must have lots of money to spend etc. Joel has done well by Sam, IL/RFL have responded as they should to a genuine threat.

Great news IMO.

also good news for the international stage, the promotion of the World Cup in 2013 rested on Sam being the poster boy and now we can push forward at club and country level

He could sign a ten year deal, it makes no difference.

Every player, in every sport, has his price, RL's vulnerable because a fortune in this sport is eminently affordable for Union. If the competition was another League club that isn't an issues, we can match them for wages and opportunities.

When a players in demand they either run down their contract or sign a new deal to ensure adequate compensation.

Joel was lost for £250,000, if the RFU identify Sam as their key man they could throw £500,000 on the table, if that was turned down £750,000, and so on.

At that stage the all to common response would be,'We thank Sam for his time at Wigan blah, blah, blah, re-invest in the club blah, blah, blah.......'

“I want to play for Wigan and no one else.”

What a quote! Cheesy but feel a bit of pride reading that.
It's historic

Worthless contract? the 3 year no talk deal is not worthless is it? Who knows how Sam will be 3 years down the line... an injury may set him back, he may lose form who knows. A pretty good deal from IL and shows Sam's commitment for 3 years and more.... after 3 we get money if he moves on it's a win win.

This puts our fans fears to rest... Sam is a cherry picker... thats what we needed to confirm wasnt it?

I don't think people have picked up on this part of it enough.

It is a statement of intent and if Sam goes to IL next year and says I want to leave because Andy Clarke has got be a gig with Joel at Sarries I'd love to see the outcome.

A line in the sand has been drawn with this contract far more than those where we trumpet a player has been give a four or five year deal and nothing more.

If I was paranoid

I could begin to think that the ambiguity in the details of Sams' new 5 year contract with Wigan and the RFL which 'ties sam to Wigan for the next 3 years' could see the RFL moving him as the marquee player to whichever new club they decide to bring into Superleague at the next reshuffle in 2015. Then again I have always believed that just because I think they are out to get me doesn't mean that they aren't.
