First impressions are very important.
Hard to conclude that Wane is remotely up to the job after today. Lots of people get over promoted, and it's not his fault, but the sooner IL comes round the better. His reaction post match is that he is "gutted" and the players will get an ear bending.
Anybody that had watched us pre season or last year would realise that we have one glaring weakness which needs fixing, without which we will be beaten by all the good teams. We need an organiser/kicker. We need Mellor, Powell, Logan or someone else to step up far far more than we need Tuson on the bench. Or we need to play Sam at 6 and anyone of a number of players at 1.
This was Wane's big chance to make an impression, and he had been dealt the perfect hand to do so. A nice home game, against depleted opposition. And he threw it away, but doesn't even realise why it happened to listen to him. It's a disgrace.

Only 1 game in, lost by 2 kicks really.
no, not really. At home they had 5-6 first temaers out and they dicked us, they were the better team by far. Score line flattered us.

Wane out calls are silly at this stage but saying we lost by two kicks is really covering up a pretty dire performance against a weak team. This is a game Wane can already look back on as one of those games of the sort he mentioned we lost last season that got away. There was only one side who deserved to win that game than that was Hudds and only four points difference flatters Wigan.

We had no answer to their game plan in the first half and where Wane does come in for fair criticism is little changed after half time.

Hold on a second. I cant believe the number of people that seem to be calling for Wane's head after one game. Our half backs consisted of a New Zealand international and a State of Origin Rep player. It is their jobs to organise and to kick, not Wanes. Our kicking game was poor and our pack weak but that is hardly any different than last year. We have not signed a new half back that can kick or organise and I am guessing that is not Wanes fault so I cant see how people expected something dramatically different. I would have liked to have seen our pack strengthened more but it is far too early to judge the players that have come in. It is a long season and I am sure we will get far better.

it is wanes job, we had no second phrase like we did last year and our tackles look poor compared to last year. Our fitness looked poor too.

Whos fault is it if not wanes as he trains and picks them? I am being serious when Im say that is the worst Wigan performance in well over 2 years.

Its the first game, but we looked like we had no attacking options, also we spent most the game in our own half. More often than not we went down the middle but when we spread it we looked dangerous. Was a bit dissapointed with some of the players who looked like they could not be bothered. There was several times when we played the ball with only three or four behind it. As already said Hock had a few good runs, but I thought Pat looked like he did not want to be there at times.
Poor ref decisions again at times but we lost it ourselves.

I don't think anyone is are they?

If the team is not dramatically different then why didn't we win today? Last season I'd still expect to have won that game with plenty to spare. They had 9 first teal players out injured and we are only missing one player who featured last season in Prescott (given Fielden and Roberts are the only other two injured players).

I do feel Wane has been dealt a bad hand with Joel, Hoffman left and Coley retiring and the players who have been brought in not being up to their standard but even so that was a very poor performance from our full strength side at home against a weaken'd opposition. A very disappointing start.

I would be pleased to be proven wrong, but if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, you can give it a while but it will still be a duck.
Finch and Tommy and MM did pretty much what would have been expected of them, because it was what we saw all last year, and the year before.
Wane has to do 3 things:
Get his recruitment right;
Get a balanced team that can do the fundamentals right; and
Adjust to the evidence before his eyes.
Sure, this is one game, but the key things are the reasons behind the defeat, and they were a combination of those 3 things. We were spoilt in having Madge as a coach, but why IL did not follow an equally rigouros approach in finding a successor was and is a mystery.
It's not the defeat, it's the manner and the context that makes it different from just one of those things. Again, if there is one game he should have been able to get them up for, it was this one.

Talk about exageration, it is the first game for Gods sake. No team should be aiming to peak in week 1 and rustiness is to be expected. Dont you think the players should take some of the blame rather than a simplistic sack Wane, after just one game, rant? Is it really Wane's fault if a State of Origin rep player and a Kiwi international have a shocking kicking game? For all you know Wane could have worked on the kicking game all off season but, just as in the last few seasons, our kicking game is awful on match day. Short of getting rid of Finch or Leuluai and signing a player with a better kicking game, which seeing as they are both under contract Wane couldnt do, what can Wane realistically do? If we dont have a first team standard player with an organising and kicking game then Wanes hands are tied.
