Briers free to play

The veteran former Wales international was penalised for throwing a punch at Leeds forward Carl Ablett during the Wolves' 40-20 qualifying play-off win over Leeds at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday.

The Rugby Football League's match-review panel brought the lowest grade charge against Briers, who is eligible for an early-guilty plea due to a clean disciplinary record and, therefore, will avoid a hearing and a suspension.

It means he will lose his right to submit another early-guilty plea for 12 months but will be able to play in Warrington's last-four clash at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday week.

The news will be a relief for Wolves coach Tony Smith, although he argued in the post-match news conference that Briers, angered by what he believed was a high tackle by Ablett, was entitled to take the law into his own hands after referee James Child failed to take any action.

Catalan Dragons hooker Eloi Pelissier has also been charged with a grade A offence after standing on an opponent, Aaron Heremaia, during his side's elimination play-off defeat at Hull on Friday.

Pelissier, whose season with the Dragons came to a close with that 14-4 defeat, is also able to submiit an early-guilty plea and avoid a ban.

Meanwhile, Batley winger Johnny Campbell is in danger of missing his side's Championship semi-final at Featherstone on Sunday after being charged with a grade B high tackle on Leigh centre Adam Higson during his side's 15-14 win in Sunday's preliminary semi-final against the Centurions.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
