There is nothing wrong with our forwards,it is the backline that are the problem.Gelling is hopeless,Sarginson is no much better,Williams may be a fine player but not ready yet.Smith is hopeless,Burgess has got his head in Sydney and Powell is average. Can anyone seriously compare with this set of players with Sam,Richards,Carmont,Tommy,Finch,Goulding or Green. We need spend monet asap.

You could have the best props in the world and it would not matter. Waneball is contrary to good prop forward play

No more dummy runners and so predictable.
Players like Patrick, Clubb, Tomkins, Farrel and Bateman would thrive on some decent plays like from three seasons or so ago.

I thought the backs looked a bit better against Hull after Charnley hobbled off and Tomkins moved into the centre with Gelling on the wing. They should leave them there for now. At least Tomkins has some idea how to play that position, after all he got capped by England RU as a centre. Gelling made his debut on the wing (and scored a hat trick if my memory serves). He's got pace aggression and a go forward attitude, all attributes wingers need in modern rugby league.
Sarginson drives me nuts. I cannot believe this lad is an international three quarter. He does not seem to have the first idea of centre play, he runs diagonals that cut off the space that should be reserved for his wing. I cannot recall seeing him drawing the tackle then passing it wide as centres are supposed to do. In fact, there was one play on Friday where we had a three man overlap and Burgess had a clear run to the line if the centre passed him the ball, Sarginson turned inside towards the forwards and killed off the move. I'd like to see him moved to full back and a proper centre who knows the position brought in. Ideally, Michael Jennings from Sydney Roosters, though the chances of that happening are zilch.
I thought Powell did pretty well against Hull. Williams, on the other hand, hasn't got started yet this season. Smith is making a lot of errors, though he did manage to go through the entire game without kicking off directly into touch for once.
Bowen's legs have gone. I don't see him ever running through a defence again. He is looking dodgy under the high ball, he knocked on one punt that put Hull back in the game. Pretty much every time he fielded a kick he looked to offload it to someone with pace, mainly Burgess, who was left to do a lot of the speed work that should have been the full back's job. Luke Dorn was brilliant at FB for Cas the other week, his pace killed us as he kept turning defence into attack. Perhaps we should wave a cheque at the Mend A Hose and see if we cannot entice him to move from the dark side (ie Yorkshire).
We need to spend some money. We must be well under the salary cap and we need to bring in some experienced creative backs to steer us away from the awful predictable unimaginative rugby we are currently dishing up.

Didn't we used to have one, we also used to have a good centre too. Both got frozen out.
But JB isn't getting frozen out, is he.

Re: A good Prop
I agree with most of your post but if Gelling has got pace then I haven't seen it, he should be playing in the pack. Joel I believe is a better centre than Gells or Sarge but when we move him out of the pack we lose size and penetration. Centres in the British game are in very short supply, whilst all the good Aussies are off limits. We may have to wait until two of our juniors emerge e.g. Gilldart and Higginson. We do however need to get more pace into our backline and therefore Hampshire needs to be given a chance.curryman wrote:I totally agree.old hooker wrote:There is nothing wrong with our forwards,it is the backline that are the problem.Gelling is hopeless,Sarginson is no much better,Williams may be a fine player but not ready yet.Smith is hopeless,Burgess has got his head in Sydney and Powell is average. Can anyone seriously compare with this set of players with Sam,Richards,Carmont,Tommy,Finch,Goulding or Green. We need spend monet asap.
