To take the discussion slightly different way who actually owns the DW?

I was talking about this with the wife,it's not beyond the realms of possibility the The lattices could well drop out of the football league (if things aren't addressed quickly) to be a non league team with a huge stadium would surely bankrupt them,so who the costs fall on too?

Wrong, to purchase the club, he needed to have the backing of the shareholders and the reason he made them such a generous offer which was a lot to them, but peanuts to himself.

If he did not need the shareholding to carry out the purchase, do you think that a multi millionaire like Dave Whelan would make such a generous offer.

From what I understand, the 89% is now owned by Ian Leneghan with the other 11% owned by those shareholders who did sell or kept one share free from a batch of eight shares to remain as shareholders.
not at all, you could buy up peopels shares until you owned 51% of the club, as the majority shareholder you could make the decisions as its a majority rule. Like IL now doesnt own the club outright but is a majority holder.

Wigan Athletic now own the DW Stadium and the Warriors were given a fifty year lease by Dave Whelan to play there.

When the idea of joint Stadium was first put forward in 1994, Dave Whelan stated that it it went ahead, it would be owned by a independent company like the KC Stadium is in Hull and both clubs would be tenants like Hull City and Hull FC.

The Stadium was owned by Whelco Holdings, the parent business company of Dave Whelan, but passed on to Wigan Athletic a couple of years or so ago and as the Latic's is also owned by Dave Whelan, it is in effect still owned by him.

The problem now is if Wigan Athletic is sold, the Stadium would be part of the sale whereas when the Stadium was still owned by Whelco, it would be a separate entity and remain in the hands of the Whelan family unless of course they decided to sell it in a separate deal. Wigan Council have a 14% share (4.9 million) share in the Stadium which cost 35 million to build.

Might explain why around the time of the change of 'ownership', our club moved its headquarters from the Stadium to Central Park as well as there being a lack of window office accommodation at the Stadium.

Hope this helps.

Asfar as I can see we been going down hill since M Offiah ran round Tait at Wembley 20 years ago.God sent us McGuire for 2 seasons relief and then onwards and downwards.Latest owner is IL and I suggest he very publicly gives responsibility for the clubs on the field performance to the manager, currently Wane. IL can privately deliver to Wane 100% salary cap,and other moneys for buying in players within reasonable levels. IL should publicly state the goal is success and if that means not one Wigan born player in the team ,so be it. All club communications to the public are issued by K Radlinsky ,and players are free to follow their own PR with the usual discretions. That gives Wane his chance, again. note expect him to fail, and be sacked.
