As soon as I saw their number 10 take the ball up for the first time I knew we were in trouble. Different level of physicality.
That said the fact that we lack creativity doesn't help and that's got nothing to do with the opposition.

Could it not be down to the way rugby is run over there. They have reserves and numerous other comps were players will train and play at hard levels constantly. We have only just got our reserves back (in some form) and week in week out we dont play the same level of teams as the skill level of superleague varies so much. Williams is good enough for superleague but he needs experiances like this to develop further.ian b wrote:If Williams isn't ready what about Brisbanes halves weren't they 19 years old ? I'm not disrespecting you but either he isn't good enough {which I believe he is } or it's down to the coaching ?
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Or to put it another way, like a Super League club in Rugby League or a Premiership club in Football playing a Championship club?Mike wrote:Yeah, we've got a team of kids. Smarter maybe but BIGGER???Wigan coach Shaun Wane insists his team's 42-12 hammering by Brisbane Broncos will be "the best thing that's happened to us".
"We just got beaten by the better team," Wane said. "They had too many big athletes and we couldn't handle them.
"We were beaten in many facets of the game by a really good team and it's not good enough. I'm disappointed but there are two ways of responding - some teams will sulk and others dust themselves down and make sure they get better.
"We need to get back into Salford on Thursday and I'm glad it's so quick.
"As daft as it sounds, that will be the best thing that's ever happened to us. We need to use that as a springboard, a learning curve and make sure we bounce back on Thursday."

If we go 3/3 or 4/4 Wane is quite happy we got beat and embarrassed by Brisbane. No doubt the Wigan Way

My thoughts exactly.mickw wrote:Our distinct lack of class players especially in the half back and centre positions really came home to roost last night,
No lack of effort but no attacking shape whatsoever, good job it wasn't a few games in for the broncos it could've been sixty.
Re: Wane - "The best thing that's happened to us".
Saying our attacking tactics were OK and they just didn't work because of an outstanding defence is just wrong and a complete contradiction. If they were right we'd have scored more tries as they would have cracked the defence!Caboosegg wrote: Our attacking tactic were fine last night. We were on there line alot. The issue was the broncos amazing defence And our errors at the last minutes. We had 2 opportunities messed up buy a last minute knock on from a bad pass.
Was that the same excuse used last week and the week before when we looked equally clueless on attack v Les Cats and Hudds? And have done so for a lot longer than that against any half decent defence in SL, nevermind v the Broncos?
What last night did is highlight this to a much greater degree than SL sides do, that is all because it is not a new issue.
It shone a light on the deficiency of our tactics and on several players (basically all the backs are just very poor).
If Wane learned a lesson from last night it ought to be that tactically he is coaching dinosaur and that several players really aren't good enough regardless of how hard they train.
Re: Wane - "The best thing that's happened to us".
I agree. I have been saying this since the start of the 2015 season when we decided to go with Gelling, Sarge and back then before he left Thornley in the centres and since it became obvious without Green our half backs create naff all.mickw wrote:Our distinct lack of class players especially in the half back and centre positions really came home to roost last night,

Wanes attitude has been that we have been close in Grand Finals so his tactics work and therefore no need to change. If we are not careful we will get left behind because any decent coach at other clubs will be looking for something new to improve their sides while we stagnate. The only person that must learn from the defeat is Wane himself and rethink his approach to the game. Time has come for us to start making strides forward again and lose the predictability that has been a feature of our attack for the last season at least.

Three years ago, a lengthy discussion on here was the idea (CPWigan) if I recall correctly, that Wane spend two years in Australia as assistant coach with a club there. Their respective coach or assistant to take charge here for the duration.
Of course it never materialised, primarily because it was a suggestion on a fans website, not a boardroom decision but just think how far ahead we'd be if, just if it had happened.
I think it's still an outstanding idea, can IL please make it happen?.

Before the start of the 2015 season Shaun Wane said we'd tweeked a few things in attack. Since then IMO our attack has been drastically less potent. "The Move" that was brought in when Madge was here was effective the majority of the time so why change so much?
Look at how easily Brisbane created overlaps. When we attack now there is far too much one man up or running sideways. Where have all the dummy runners gone? At nearly every ptb practically every player was on the move and a viable option for the player with the ball. Now? nothing of the sort.
I heard Phil Clarke say teams have worked us out as we attack the same. I don't think we do. On the odd occasion we do "The Move" it's slow and ponderous. Is this a lack of practice or players of a lower standard? Probably both but mainly the latter.
Sam Tomkins (if he's not been ruined by injury) should make a huge difference but I don't think people realise how good and how important players like Goulding were. he knew his role in the plays and when necessary had the flair to do something special.
I've had many a disagreement with CP and others over SW but there are issues that need addressing. The main one of which being the interchange by the clock. Saturday it was ovious to all and sundry that with MM off we needed lockers and IMO Ben Flower on the pitch more. I was in disbelief when the 2nd half started and Lockers wasn't on the pitch.
