looks like setting a good example to young players goes out of the window when your desperate.
He gets a long deal because he is an outstanding player, you can also bet he's getting paid at a lower rate than his skill deserves.
As for setting an example, two words Ben Flower. We live in a glass house so don't throw stones, some of the stuff our players get away with and hushed up is shocking.
don't see what flowers got to do with it,completely different situation.
You mentioned setting a good example to young players, plenty of our players past and present have crossed the line and got away with it. The club clearly don't care and actively cover things up.
If they had any interest in setting an example Ben, Bateman, Micky, Sam & Hock would all of been sacked. The better the player the more they can get away with, Zak will fit right in.
By some accounts the attitudes of the young players has already changed from a couple of years ago, so less than acceptable behaviour is accepted.

I wonder how many of the outraged will now be boycotting games next season, or will they have conveniently forgotten come season ticket time when they realize how silly they have been

There is a huge difference between one of our players crossing the line and going out of your way to sign someone who has zero connections with the club who was done for drugs on a four year deal.

What some players have alleged to have done (Micky, Sam and Bateman) is totally irrelevant. Few even know they allegedly did anything never mind take drugs.

Likewise Flower. By no stretch of the imagination is that relevant. We didn't offer him a four year deal for decking a player in a GF! We hung him out to dry and gave him one of the longest club suspensions ever. That is not setting a bad example or rewarding bad behaviour. It's the opposite of what you are trying to suggest.

Hock is the only relevant example we have to go on because he is the only Wigan player who has been caught for the same offence.

Even that is different. Hock was a Wigan player who came through the junior ranks here. Plenty didn't want the club to stand by him but at least he had a connection with Wigan RL.

With Hardaker they have gone out of their way to support a player with no connection to the club at all. They owe him nothing yet have rewarded his drug taking with as four year deal.

I suspect it's all down to money and the opportunity arose to get him cheaper than Sam T. Either that or his availability is just pure luck as faced with losing Sam T the club had no idea where to find an equally good replacement. Either way it's an opportunistic signing but not in the good sense of the word. I expect he'll "do a Hock" and after a while will want away back to sunny Yorkshire or will screw up again.

I don't think there will be a Wigan fan out there who won't be wondering when they turn up to the games if he's going to be on the team sheet and not been sacked that week.

They won't care Dave, we have signed one of the best players in the league.
As for your objections, if we wouldn't of signed him you'd be complaining also.

Hardaker is a very good signing.
We are all aware of his problems but the club have awarded him a contract knowing full well the difficulties he may well encounter.
Given we are losing our second best player and second most influential we have now replaced Sam with a top quality full back.
A good piece of business by the club.
Well done IL, KR and SW.
