Joe Shorrocks joins Leigh on loan

Shorrocks moves to Leigh on an initial two-week loan.

Matt Peet: “This is an excellent opportunity for Joe and suits all parties.”

Shorrocks will be available for Leigh’s Super League fixtures against Hull KR and St Helens.

Joe Shorrocks has joined Leigh Leopards on an initial two-week loan.

The utility forward will link up with former head coach Adrian Lam at Leigh Sports Village. Lam gave the former Wigan St Patrick’s junior his Wigan debut against Wakefield in April 2019.

The 23-year-old has played 57 times for Wigan, including 13 starts, scoring 2 tries.

Head coach Matt Peet said: “This is an excellent opportunity for Joe and suits all parties. Following a quality pre-season, regular games in Super League will best prepare Joe to perform when he gets an opportunity with us.”

Joe Shorrocks is sponsored by Netstar 9 Childcare.

Matt Peet discusses Joe Shorrocks' future at Wigan after Leigh Leopards loan deal

Shorrocks has joined the Leopards on an initial two-week arrangement

Wigan coach Matt Peet insists Joe Shorrocks still has a major role to play in his plans for 2023 despite leaving the club on loan. Shorrocks has joined local rivals Leigh Leopards on an initial two-week loan deal, having failed to feature in the Warriors' opening two league games.

He was a regular in the Wigan side during Peet's first season in charge, but the form of several forwards, including Morgan Smithies, has left opportunities for Shorrocks limited thus far in 2023. However, Peet stressed that the forward will return to the DW Stadium in the weeks to come and will play a part in Wigan's hunt for silverware.

He needs to play, and he deserves to play," Peet told Rugby League Live.

Peet continued: "He's very highly rated here, and I very much expect him to stand out for Leigh."

Wigan will look for back-to-back wins when they travel to Castleford on Friday evening, and Peet revealed he has no fresh injury concerns for the game.

We're fit and healthy, nobody misses out who played last week so we've some decisions to make about our full 17," he said. "We're in good shape, touch wood."
