On another note, I see that Cas's "Curly" Watts has taken over Bentley's role as season ticket holder for the disciplinary panel :D

Also interesting to see Brett Ferres get a mention again. Remember his disgusting "chicken wing" tackle at Headingley a few years back. Was it on Gildart? I don't recall details very well, but I think whoever our injured player was, they were out for longer than his ban.

Tomkins has always been good at cheating and cheap shots, perfected them while playing for us, that's why a lot of other fans hate him.
He should definitely have been banned for the knee up, seen on YouTube.
Haven't seen the Ellis incident, was away this weekend and Sky changed the channel, so had 2 hours of tennis!!!!!

The real reason saints kept appealing is shown this week. No bans at all despite being sited.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

It wasn’t a chicken wing it was a very serious crusher tackle. One that could have broken Gildart’s neck & ended his career!

Why Super League side avoided any bans despite being cited 11 times by disciplinary

The match review panel has seen Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Hull FC, Castleford Tigers and Leigh Leopards stars in hot water.

12 players have been charged from Super League and League One with four players banned.

Three of these bans went to Super League stars with Liam Horne, Liam Watts and Kaide Ellis all banned for next week.

Horne and Watts’ bans were picked up against St Helens which was a difficult game for the panel to review with St Helens players cited 11 times with only one player charged with Joe Batchelor fined.

Some may question how they all avoided bans but this is an example of the system working as it highlights actions that are close to bans so that players can avoid them but on this occasion there is no need for suspension.

Below is a breakdown of why Saints’ stars avoided bans.

Morgan Knowles, Late Contact on Kicker, NFA
‘Player is late but tackles opponent to ground. Footage is inconclusive as to any flexion to the head or neck of the opponent.’
. * serial offender!

Sione Mata’utia, Dangerous Contact, NFA
‘Player drops body onto the ground but does not apply pressure to the legs of the opponent.’

George Delaney, High Tackle, NFA
‘Opponent is dropped by low tackle from player’s teammate and falls into players chest.’

George Delaney, Promotion of shoulder by ball carrier, NFA
‘Player turns back into opponent carrying the ball but does not promote shoulder into the opponent.’

Joe Batchelor, Late Contact on Passer, NFA
‘Player pushes opponent after ball has been released. Contact is minimal.’

Joe Batchelor, Dangerous Contact, Charge – £250 Fine
‘Law 15.1 (i)
Dangerous Contact – Defender uses any part of their body forcefully to twist, bend or otherwise apply pressure to the limb or limbs of an opposing player in a way that involves an unacceptable risk of injury to that player.
Grade B’

Jack Welsby, High Tackle, NFA
‘Player makes initial contact with the shoulder and rides up into the neck.’

Tommy Makinson, Late Contact on Passer, NFA
‘Player is late however legitimately goes into tackle opponent and makes minimal contact when the ball is released.’

Tommy Makinson, Off the ball contact, NFA
‘Player tackles opponent who does not have the ball but contact is minimal.’

Sam Royle, Professional Foul, NFA
‘Player slows down the ruck close to the try line. Professional foul.’

Moses Mbye, Late Contact on Passer, NFA
‘Player pushes opponent after ball is released. Contact is minimal.’

Kaide Ellis, the Wigan Warriors forward who has had his own fair share of run-ins with the Match Review Panel since his Super League arrival, has also been handed a one-match ban for a crusher tackle in their victory over Catalans Dragons on Saturday. He misses their game against Salford Red Devils.

Revealed: Why Sam Tomkins avoided ban after injuring Wigan Warriors star

Over the weekend, Wigan Warriors claimed a vital win over in France, Leeds Rhinos suffered a crushing blow, Warrington Wolves claimed a key win over Hull FC in the race for the play-offs against the likes of Hull KR and Salford Red Devils.

It is one of the most competitive Super Leagues we have ever seen which is what makes bans at this stage so detrimental.

Castleford Tigers are in a relegation battle with Wakefield Trinity and will be lamenting the loss of star signing Liam Horne to a two match ban for a dangerous throw and Liam Watts to a one match ban for a trip.

At the other end of the table, Kaide Ellis has been banned for dangerous contact against Catalans Dragons but Wigan fans may also be unhappy that Sam Tomkins has avoided a ban for raising the knee at Brad O’Neill.

He was charged for the incident but only fined.

The RFL simply said in the minutes: “Raised knee by ball carrier.”

No mitigating circumstances were listed so the reason behind him avoiding a ban is as simple as the fine was deemed sufficient punishment.

Following the latest round of Betfred Super League & Betfred League One fixtures, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:

Liam Horne (Castleford Tigers) – Grade D Dangerous Throw – 2 Match Penalty Notice and a £250 Fine
Liam Watts (Castleford Tigers) – Grade B Trip – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Joe Batchelor (St Helens) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – £250 Fine
Marc Sneyd (Salford Red Devils) – Grade B Strikes – £250 Fine
Oliver Gildart (Leigh Leopards) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – £250 Fine
Sam Tomkins (Catalans Dragons) – Grade B Raising knee in tackle – £250 Fine
Kaide Ellis (Wigan Warriors) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Jack Brown (Hull FC) – Grade A Dangerous Contact – N/A
Sam Walters (Leeds Rhinos) – Grade B Trips – £250 Fine
Jordan Thomson (Workington Town) – Grade A Foul Language – N/A
Josh Johnson (Oldham) – Grace B Dangerous Contact – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Brett Ferres (Doncaster) – Grade B Trips – £40 fine

The following player was handed a caution:

Oliver Russell (Huddersfield Giants) – Other Contrary Behaviour
Today’s meeting considered incidents from the weekend’s Betfred League One fixtures, as well as the Betfred Super League, because the League One Promotion Play-Offs start next Sunday (September 3) – so any suspensions would kick in immediately, with any challenges to be heard at this week’s independent Operational Rules Tribunal (Tuesday August 29).

The weekend’s Betfred Championship fixtures will be considered as normal at a meeting of the Match Review Panel on Thursday, with any suspensions delayed until the weekend of September 9-10, to allow players to challenge at next Tuesday’s Operational Rules Tribunal (September 5).
