In a nut shell so to speak:average numbers only exist in an arithmetical Calculus. (Abstract concept). Next time you visit a RL game game count how many non cardinal numbered tackles you see. None. But most of you knew that anyway and as one of you commented it is close of season.

Median will give you a cardinal number if you're after one.
If you're after the most common number of tackles by each player use the mode.
Using the "median" is just the mean number between the greatest number and the least and yes it will give you a Cardinal number as a result but it needs to be expressed as such. There is nowt wrong by expressing the resultant datum of the average count as long as it isn't expressed as as tackle per game which woud make it false and dare I say nonsense Food for thought though
