The Super League stars facing huge bans early in 2025 after disciplinary overhaul

Super League has dramatically overhauled its disciplinary process for 2025, with a new points-based system that immediately puts several of the competition’s big names in danger of significant bans early into the season.

As revealed last week, players will now have points added to their personal tally every time they are charged with an offence. Grade A is worth one point, B is three, C is five, D is 12 and E means a referral to tribunal: meaning a likely end outcome of more than 12.
Liam Byrne: 15 points

The Wigan Warriors forward has two serious charges against his name over the past year. The first was from the end of March, and the derby against St Helens following a Grade E head contact incident. On this year’s system, that is 12 points.

Add to that the three points for a Grade C head contact in May, and Byrne knows one mis-step in the first two months of the season would result in a two-match ban at a minimum.

Why can’t it start for every clubs player to start with a clean sheet?

I know Wigan have a full side, 13, players but if this is supposed to be something new, start it new not going off the misdemeanours in 2024!

Fecking ridiculous the RFl! And these are the people running our game that are "killing it" IMO

Fecking imbeciles the lot of them!

i agree, it doesnt make sense that players are somehow being targetted before the season has started. Players like Byrne, and no doubt others are only going to need to fart in the 1st game, and then facing a ban already

i get that many felt the now old system was flawed but starting the new system with players already targeted just seems plain stupid. Let them all start with a clean slate, and let the new system take place from there on, and then we can all comment on its merits thereafter

How did Harry end up with 13 points, if he so much as breaths on the ref and gets a point for a grade A it is an instant ban

Bit of an own goal this change.

Means it's more likely to have key player banned for finals resulting in a poorer match.

So does it work in a way that say if a player accumulated 8 points up to May last year, then come June this year those points will 'drop off' effectively meaning the player is now on zero points.

If so then I suspect a player could cop a ban say in May this year if they get a three point penalty, but then in June they will reduce to three points so any further points wont result in an instant ban but just start to accumulate on the ladder again and so on.

Is that how it is supposed to work?

Yes. Liam Byrne loses the majority of his points in March. Not sure about Harry Smith. When did his big ban happen?
