Of course we were poor but that refereeing performance was so unacceptable as to query why he was ever given a SL role.
So many errors but that penalty for lying on in the first few minutes which was for a three second 'lying on' which was followed by ................. nothing at all for Leeds, despite them lying on forever at the tackle.
The thing that defined the match was Smith's lack of competence regarding offside. I was baffled by our failure to make any metres until I looked a bit closer. For our first three PTBs, Smith stood 15 to 20 metres in front of the PTB. Leeds realised that and were rarely less than six yards from the PTB. On the fourth tackle, Smith moved up to 10 metres and hey presto - Leeds stayed onside and we made much more progress. That's so basic that even amateur refs would have worked it out. Naturally, the touch judges didn't help.
Didn't think the Video ref was up to much either but Smith was shambolic.

I don't blame the ref for the defeat or for any of our losses this season but the way our games are reffed has confused/concerned me for a few seasons. Dominant teams usually win penalty counts but we very rarely do. A startling stat I posted on RLFans is the amount of penalties each team in the top 5 have received this season, in their 5 games. They are-

Saints 33
Leigh 30
HKR 29
Hull 24
Wigan 8

That is absolutely nuts. We've had some big wins, where teams have been on the back foot and we're still way behind any of the teams. It can't be a coincidence that every team have their best disciplinary performance every time they play Wigan! Do we not play for them enough ala Walmsley? Do us as fans not scream enough for them, ala Leeds last night? Are there too many Wigan refs, not wanting to look biased? I don't have an answer but it doesn't feel right at all. Surely somebody at the club is on to it and looking for answers.

Agree with your conclusion, I'll add a different perspective - a lot of fans of other clubs will say we are dirty or cynical but that would only affect the number of penalties we give away (and I'll bet we are near the top of that stat) not how many we get!

If I'm reading the stats right, Wigan are the cleanskins so far this season, with the fewest pens conceded.

It's weird, we have conceded the least as well with 16 (double what we've been given mind) but lose the penalty count every week. Why there are so few penalties in our games is a mystery. We can only control our side of things and looking at it on the face if it, we've been ok but to have been given only 8 penalties in 5 games is astonishing. It has to be some sort of record.

It all started in my mind last season this, after the naked eye told me we were getting done most weeks on the penalty counts. I looked after 25 games and we'd won only 5. If we push the boundaries and give penalties away, I can live with that but I can't live with us getting 8 penalties in 5 games. It's impossible that every side suddenly becomes squeaky clean when they play Wigan.

I'm a saddo and totted up the received penalties from the individual game stats on the superleague site. Our discipline has actually been ok but the oppositions is super human!

Leigh gave us one penalty on opening night. They've given away 23 in the other 4 games they've played.

Huddersfield didn't get penalised at all in our game but gave given away 22 in their other 4 fixtures.

It's enough to give you a complex!
