Why have we got a koala as a mascot in the first place? I didn't realise it was an indiginous species of deepest Wigan, maybe West Houghton??!!
1. Westhoughton
2. Westhoughton is NOT in Wigan
3. It wouldnt therefore be in deepest Wigan anyways
4. I'm a Westhoughtoner
5. erm... I most Cow Yeds (Westhoughtoners) do look a bit like koalas.
With a bit of searching on t'internet, West Houghton is indeed in Bolton (just) and therefore apologise for my gross inaccuracy! However, a friend of mine is a "keaw yed" and he would probably beat me round the head with a eucalyptus branch if I suggested to him he was from Bolton.

Here is a story i found whilst looking to see whether W Houghton was in Bolton,
"Associated with the Wakes is Westhoughton's 'keaw yed' legend, a simple story of a farmer and a cow. A cow got its head stuck in a gate. A farmer came along. Faced with the cow and gate problem, he solved it by sawing off the cow's head. The story has similar variations world wide, and indicates stupidity, but also the Howfeners ability to laugh at themselves, allowing themselves to be nicknamed 'keaw yeds'. The story had never been heard before 1870, and is said to derive from an incorrect newspaper story, rather than a real legend. One explanation of the keaw yed legend relates to the old handloom weavers, who each week used to walk to Leigh with thin lengths of cloth which they sold to merchants. Their silhouetted appearance in the distance apparently resembled cows heads, and led to the nickname.

It is, but then I doubt anyone was really going to take seriously a thread whose title contains the word "koala". Although there may be some similarities between little fluffy tree huggers and some of our players' attempts at playing rugby this season...
