An "8 point try" would be the penalty (potentially worth 2 points) plus the penalty try (4 points) plus potentially another 2 from the conversion of that try. Someone posted that a penalty try can only be given in the act of scoring a try (which isn't true), I was correcting this not suggesting it should have been an 8 pointer.
Incidently the 8 points come from; 4 for the try, 2 from a successful conversion and another 2 from a successful penalty from in front of the sticks. In reality in can vary between 4 and 8 points.

If an attacking player carrying the ball rounds the full back and is certain to score but the fullback illegally trips him on the 10 m line then a penalty try could be awarded even though he is not in the act of scoring a try.
