The relegation = we cannot develop young players is a red herring. The real question is comparative cost / quality. As it stands it is cheaper and more cost effective to buy an overseas player. Two factors contribute to that problem; salary cap with no encouragement to develop home grown talent and poor player development from juniors upwards due to a lack of investment (time, expertise, money)

No it isn't. It's the time factor that is important, though, rather than the cost.

Clubs constantly in fear of relegation cannot afford to spend, say, 5 years developing youngsters, simply because they have to produce immediate results in order to survive.

As Terry Matterson said:
"I would have loved to have had Craig Huby out there playing and I would have gone with Andy Kain a lot more this year, but there's just so much riding on it.

"I was going to play a kid called Joe Westerman this week if we were safe but you just can't do it."

and as Ian Millward said:
Under the current system, clubs cannot plan for the long term. They need that stability if they are to develop players properly, get backing for new stadiums etc.

Where would Ashton play then? As we said about Dallas, Ashton is NOT big enough for a centre. Why not give him a chance on the wing - should Richards move to Huddersfield?

No! That's the problem. The lad is just settling into the full-back role, and then to move him to wing next season and maybe centre the season after! That is exactly how good young players are ruined! We need to leave him at full-back and develop him!

Geoff seriously that's just bull put out by the coaches. These so called youngsters simply are not good enough. the system in place to produce youngsters is poor. Cas gave lots of these youngsters a seson in Division 1, at the start of this season when free from relegation worrys (likewise every other club) Terry Matterson and Castleford chose not to play youngsters. They had Huby, they grabbed Sculthorpe, they grabbed Ward. Cas made that decision with no real threat. Had Cas been exempt from relegation they would have done exactly the same.

Wakefield. They have no youngsters. They do not invest in young players. They have had to cancel academy matches this season.

Huddersfield? Any academy players coming through? nope. Signings yes Aussies/kiwis/Wiganers.

You could go on and on. The system is god damn awful. I will give you an incident that happened this week. Wigan v Hull U18s Academy. hull were out of their depth, both the assistant and coach went to their players and the sum total of their coaching acumen was cmon fellas show some effin pride, cmon fellas win the effin wrestle. Time and time again. A numpty could have told them that. A real coach would have said; we kick for touch on the last, walk to scrums, slow the game down. Target their 7 when we have the ball, tire him out, easier yards. Etc etc.

The coaching system in this country is awful.

From what i have been told, Withers will spend a lot of time on the bench as a cover man for the back line, and he is going to act as a mentor for Ashton! At the back of my mind, i wonder if Noble is looking ahead for a coaching role for him?

Withers will be a great signing, hes a good fullback and very experienced. Has anyone thought what happens if Ashton gets injured?. I still think Nobby may play Ashton at Centre anyway.
