Thanks Mr Whelan for the free tickets for todays Latics game.We went with an open mind but left knowing that Superleague crowds although smaller in number generate a much better atmosphere.Today the Watford fans made more noise than the home fans throughout the game and the number of home supporters doing the Wigan Walk 10 minutes before full time was like the bad old days at Central Park home games. The match was not particularly memorable and certainly not an advert for the game that would encourage us to go back again. We wish Wigan Athletic well for the rest of their season but we will stick to enjoying Rugby League.

just a little follow up to JAYDE HATES LON's posting regarding fans.thr average gates at latics this season is 15-487 so please get your facts right before spouting off.We get enough flak regarding being a minority sport only played on the m62 corridor,WITHOUT YOU PROOVING IT

i dont see your problem she is right the only reason wheelen has given us free tickets is to boost there attendance for a game they wouldnt of been expecting a huge crowd which is exactly what he will do when he gives them free tickets to watch rugby he will give them tickets for the likes of harlequins or catalans

i dont know how many went today i certainly didnt. i dont whether it was a big game for them or not because im the slightest bit intrested in football and certainly not the latics. not many of there fans will want to watch the warriors either so its a bit of a pointless idea

i watch rugby[and have done for many years]but it annoys me when you read of fans spouting off''we are better than you '' we get better crowds, look at what is saig regarding saints crowds, would you tell me when the crowd ever won anything?so please tell it as it is and not what ''the little man'' in your head says.I am proud to be a WIGANER and it would give me great pleasure to see both codes at the top of their games.speak the truth and shame the devil :o

as it says below im a proud wiganer to doesnt mean we have to like football so what if people say things about other teams fans think after the year we have had and the support we give i think we got the right to be proud of our support. a crowd may never win anything but as noble said this year the crowd have been the 14th man for wigan.

think you may need to calm down everyone is entitled to there opinion and if you dont like one persons opinion on something it best you just ignore it

as for something not being the truth we will soon find out when our season starts and see how many latics fans decide they want to go and watch rugby

I feel sorry for anyone who took up Whealen’s offer to watch Latics play Watford because I listen to bits on the radio and apparently is was a rubbish game of football and Latics were booed off at the end.

As for Latics getting bigger crowds than Warriors it does not mean that Latics are better supported because you have to look at in context.
Latics are a football team playing in the most popular league in England in the most popular sport in England so you would expect them to have large crowds because there are a lot of people who like football whether they support Latics are not. Latics attendances are poor compared to Premier League figures, I think most rugby fans accept that there are more football supports than rugby supports in England, mainly because football is a simple sport for people who can not understand sports with more than 5 rules.

Warriors they are a big club in the top league of a relatively small sport compared to football yet they can still fill the JJB Stadium. Warriors are also on TV more than Latics as very few Prem games are on standard sky TV so some people watch it on sky.

Problem is 15,000 average in the premiership is poor and means DW has to dig into his pockets to pay wages id guess.

Whist 14,500 in league is a decent average. When you take into account that of the 14,500 its usually 14,000 Wiganers there. Of the 15,000 that Latics get id guess 5,000+ are away fans.

Granted oldtimer, we'll get higher attendances than usual at the big games, saints, bradford, etc, but this season we were getting 12,000 odd against the likes of huddersfield. So to come out with an average as high as we did was good to see, and credit to us as fans.
The thing Latics have in there favour is that the fans of teams like united, arsenal and chelsea will see latics as a cheap way to go and see their team. How hard is it to get united tickets? I'm not a fan of football, but I know they're like gold dust. I know a couple of united fans that work at our place, who said they would definately be going to the united match at wigan because they can't get tickets for home games. The other thing is, how many teams do they play from within 30 mins drive, 5,6?
You can't compare the two sports for all the reasons posted before on this thread, but compare us to the likes of Saints, the league leaders, and I think we should be proud of our fan base
I've said this before, I bear no grudge to the latics or there fans, I'm glad that they are in the premiership and good luck to them in the future, but football is just not my thing, and even a free ticket isn't enough to tempt me to go.
Anyway, who says we have to be fair in our thinking when it comes to supporting our club, are you telling me you're not biased in your support when watching wigan agianst saints? As far as I'm concerned, we're the best club in the world, have the best fans in the world and watch the best game in the world.
Cheers.
