Heard a few different things about this rumour this morning ranging from defiantly not happening to already signed, the most interesting is:

Martin Gleeson and Wigan have agreed personal terms so Wigan know how much space they need on the cap. A deal has been done for Darrell Goulding to leave Wigan but not going to Warrington although his release is subject to Wigan securing all the salary cap space to sign Gleeson. No clubs are interested in Mathers but a few clubs are trying to take advantage by offering for players Wigan weren't originally going to release.

At the start of 2008 Goulding was very good, and was getting plenty of tries too, but when the team started playing poorly so did Goulding. Fair enough, Noble drops him after half a season, probably the right thing to do. He's then recalled for the Saints game (he was in my opinion MOTM) and Huddersfield (another good game in a poor performance) and he was then dropped again. Since then, he's played 2 more SL games, against Hull (he played very well, had a hand in 2 tries, and was by all means better than Carmont in that game), and then against Cas where he got a try and was a lot better in defence than people give him credit for, since he had the incapable Smith and the passenger Pryce alongside him all game, he didn't even miss a tackle unlike those 2.

So effectively, 2 good games and 2 decent games since he was dropped half way through his first full season.
Compare him to Shenton, Clubb, Watkins etc all, but they've all had plenty of bad games too, but they've also played more games for their sides in the past year, and been given a bit of consistency.
Spot on assessment of Goulding's senior career with Wigan. He is a victim of our coach who I am now truly sick and fed up of now this latest rumour surfaced.

He got dropped for Smith's failings this season.

On rlfans it has been said Goulding has asked to leave and if so who can blame him.

I don't often post, I do however have it on good authority that the deal of Gleeson in exchange for Mathers and Goulding has been completed this morning and will be announced later today or tomorrow.

Goulding? Young, very good player. Wigan were forced to play him because they had no choice and he never let the team down. Should he suffer because the club did not exercise it's famous duty of care? One could argue if we took the stance you are suggesting Joel Tomkins would not be here either. How long before people say get rid of Ainscough? get rid of Sam Tomkins.

The current Wigan team, is let down by the established players IMO. Some of us worry that a centre partnership of Gleeson and Carmont has a combined age of 60+.
CP i posted the post in the Gleason thread, hence the "wtf" post after that  :exc:

Also, if Warrington are playing silly beggars and wanting a transfer fee, then why doesn't IL just sign Gleeson for next season and do Warrington out of any moneys

Just to add to what I see as a very fair summary. Goulding has gone back to the reserves and not spat his dummy out despite seemingly being the scapegoat. He scored tries for fun as a 16 year old for the academy and was rated ahead of John Walker / Sean Gleeson. Whenever he is dropped he goes back to the reserves and scores tries for fun again. Sure he has faults but show me a 21 year old player that does not. Even Falau has the odd fault.

Every time he has been dropped he has asked Brian Noble why he has been dropped and on 5 occasions he has not been told why. How is a young player / any player supposed to improve when the coach will not tell him A) What he has done wrong and B) What he needs to do to improve ?

Exactly and what message are we sending to the other young players at Wigan. Goulding can only get better IMO. Gleeson still quality is not going to get any better, I would say he is past his best albeit he is still better than 95% of SL centres. George? I know weall like the guy but his form this season has not been anywhere near as good as 2008. Is George going to get any better? No the best we can hope is that he finds and retains his 2008 form.

Well I can only hope your source is wrong.

Gleeson though a good player isn't good enough nor does he have long enough left in his career for us to be shipping out a 21 year old.

It seems Goulding has been written off based on a few subs appearances in 2007, half a season in 2008 and what little we have seen of him in 2009 where he has had to put up with Smith leaving gaps a mile wide on his side of the pitch.

Never mind Noble but IL should hang his head in shame if this deal is done.

Dave

Smith's defence is even ordinary in reserve grade.
