We have Tommy (probably) playing his last season so Smith needs to be ready to take on the half back role by then or we look elsewhere?
We need to look elsewhere now,Smith is not the answer, simply not good enough.

I don’t get this forum
Call Sam Powell who is 29 a half back who couldnt get in the first team in that position and winded up being a back up hooker and left there for not being a good enough standard and everyone leaps to his defence like he’s the second coming of Jesus talking about how he could improve and how he works hard blah blah
Harry smith is 22 coming off a season playing with a busted shoulder and no one seems to want to give him a chance and ping him out the club

Agreed Wigan Forever.
As I said on an earlier post we can’t underestimate how the lack of confidence throughout the squad last season had an impact on players performances and it will take time to build that confidence back up.
We’re 4 games in and you could pinpoint flaws in every players games but it seems like there are one or two easy targets at the minute, namely Powell, Smith and Miski to a degree.
Let’s not forget 2 of the 3 above were named in the England knights squad last season so Anderson et al must have also spotted something in these “awful” and “not good enough” players
Peet, Lockers and Briers are responsible for picking the team based on what they see in training, the reserves and on first team performances.
If they deem that someone is worthy of a spot in the match day 17 then that’s good enough for me.

What forum are you reading

this one has a constant tirade of hate for Powell, the only people who defend him don't say how good he is only that he is not as bad as some posters make out.
The forums simple.
You have those that no wigan player will be good enough unless they are a big name NRL player and the happy Clappers
Inbetweeners are not allowed and unless your view is negative your wrong

Maybe everyone is a stretch but you certainly get a lot more backlash than im seeing here for a kid with his career ahead of him
For what its worth i think Smith lacks a bit of pace but he seems a decent player. He probably doesnt get in a top team at the moment but i expect him to stay in superleague. Truth is no-one really knows yet he's only had 1 season and we now know he was playing injured for a lot of it. Id like to see him out on loan if possible i dont think the reserve grade is good enough to bring him on he needs to be playing against full bloodied teams IMO.
I think its way too early to write him off but he needs to not fall into Shorrocks trap of waiting around for a chance at wigan for far too long likewise Wigan need to either make him part of their plans and blood him in or help him to find another team.

Didn't he sign a new 3 year deal last year? So the likiehood of Wigan helping him find another team and getting a fee is the question.
With Tommy more than likely retiring end of season and the French / Field likely off back to Aus (not that i believe either of them can play as a regular 6 or 7) then I could see Smith taking the number 7 shirt next season but he needs to be playing regularly at a high standard.
Dual Reg at Newcastle would be no good, would Lam take him at Leigh or we're looking at a loan deal to another SL club.
I can see him staying here for the season working with Tommy / Briers and Cust but he needs regular game time in order not to stand still or knock his confidence even more.

From the clips I saw he was instrumental in a number of key moments in attack.
Yes he also made a few mistakes, but show me a player who hasn't when they are starting off - especially when you have your hands on the ball so much. Even the super hyped prodigy Welsby has shown himself a little suspect at fielding kicks when put under pressure this season.
IF he can cut out the mistakes going forward which is the key area of improvement required in his game, then I think he has the attacking potential to make a good half.
He's working with a new attacking structure, halfback partner and different structure to what we saw under Lam, and coming off the back of disrupted pre-season.
I think give the kid a break and see how he goes after a decent run of games - he has too much potential to throw out now IMO.

Absolutely spot on!

I think the Powell and Smith comparison is unfair on Smith. In his case, we know what type of player he is and the question is how far he can go as that kind of player. In Powell’s case we know what type of player he is (and how far he can go) and some of us argue that we would be better off with a different kind of player.
