Why people feel the need to compare a £50 million pound footballer to a RL player beggars belief IMO!! However, 99% of footballers that decide they want to move get their move do they not? which defeats the argument anyhow.
If a player does not want to stay there is not a lot you can do about it despite the high and mighty screaming stick 2 fingers up blah blah blah.
Maybe, sadly, this is the way RL is destined to go. When people scoff and grin at England RU doing badly, think again. A bad England RU team = lets find new players! When people support an egalatarian RL then fine but remember this is what happens and will continue to happen.
Sod off i grin at England losing in union as i am Welsh. And boy its been a fun weekend.

And so you should BUT you know the England Rah Rah's, a loss = national disaster = spend, spend, spend.
They are spending win or lose. Just dont understand the mass hysteria re Joel going it is as Rugby Leagus is finsihed. Faz left, Robinson, Volcano, Hape etc we are still here and our support has gone up.
We ahve lost much better players than Joel and we are still here. RL will not go semi pro it makes enough to keep a full time pro league going. The cap needs to be restructured but wether they do it or not is another matter.

Unfortunately SL gets weaker and weaker IMO, we get worse internationally AND Joel will not be the last nor only one to go. I watch sport / music / drama whatever to be blown away by the quality. I prefer to pay a little extra for top quality than watch the left overs. If we retain the present format of SL, franchising and a salary cap we may as well abandon professional RL.

Not goimg to quote your message CPwigan
I do agree people will pay for more quality. Franchaising is a decent idea if it forces clubs to develop itself. But the cap is taking some decent players out of the game.

If Joel leaves then he will have rolled over. If he stays he won't have.
I hope it's the latter not just because it is Joel in particular but because of the message that sends out.
So you'd be happy stuck with a player who will clearly be upset and all the baggage that would come with it just to prove a point or rather than say a chairman who takes the wider view and has a plan b with maybe an able replacement?
There is no evidence of a plan b but even if there were I would quite happily put Joel on gardening leave for the next four years and take the hit of having an effective squad of 24 if he took his bat and ball home in order to show that contracts mean what they say. This is in my opinion taking the wider view.

That's not the original picture !!!
They must have realised their mistake!
Looks like they did, it normally takes a few hours before someone points out the mistakes to them. I took a screen shot but couldn't work out how to post the image. ( thanks for fixing the link by the way JL) RL media coverage is diabolical down here and sums up the problem.
Anyone think that by signing JT on a five year contract was done in the knowledge that a move to RU was planned simply to increase the value of the deal... Basically all the talk has been a smokescreen. Great for the finances not so great for the supporters to be mislead - if true of course.

No, because if Joel knew he was going to Rugby Union it would not have been in his interest to sign a long term contract. He would have done what Kyle Eastmond did.

If a player wants to go then let him,why would we keep a player if he has not got his heart in the club?Players have been leaving RL for many years and the game still goes on.The clowns at Red Hall and Sky are ruining the game not players that want to better themselves.

They went when their contracts were up & their RL careers almost over.

Because you want to keep other players at the club and you can't very well enforce Sam Tomkins five year deal if you let Joel get out of his obligations.
If we enforced JT's contract and he was as miserable as sin for the next four years then who cares? Wigan comes first not JT.
Players have been leaving RL for many years and the game still goes on.The clowns at Red Hall and Sky are ruining the game not players that want to better themselves.
Contracts like we have now are a relatively recent thing. Until the Bosman ruling you could even get a transfer fee for a player out of contract and prevent him playing for anyone else. Now we have contracts that makes players free agents at the end they should honour their contracts.
If they don't want to then they should be made to or all contracts are worthless. As the example of the Spurs player shows contracts can be enforced and so we should to set the marker down.
Contracts have to work both ways.

Its not just that he is apparentley been allowed to leave but it is seems IL is rolling the red crapet for him to go. For a change i agree with DaveO. IL should have dug his heels in and played the long game as Spurs did with Modric. And before anyone points out he will go in January. He wont as Chelsea then went for their second choice Meirelles.
The bit in bold - Thats my point though Gimble. How do you know that. Provide a link to an article or say IL has told you in person.
The speed of this happening. Last week rumors started and now he pulls out of the England sqaud. A deal usually takes a lot longer to sort out and the speed rumors hit these forums as well as rlfans makes it sound like its happened in the last 2-3 weeks. After all March he was more than happy to stay and play for Wigan. Now inside 7 months he wants out.
I'll ask you again how that makes it IL rolling out the red carpet
