though he didn't play for us, i seem to recall Lee Oudenryan (SP) being a wee bit nippy
I remember him. Didn't he win a challenge race with Offiah in Sydney?

The Aussies have been discussing it already. http://forums.melbournecupchallenge.com ... p?p=204351

For Offiah fans - remember this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1QHLrG2gQ4

On his day ET was no slouch either!
Scholfield mentioned this years ago and said Offiah slipped on the line

I remember Offiah running round ET in Aus the game Mike Greg went the full length.

Offiah always seemed to have another gear as he could keep the gap over anyone.

I also watch Offiah beat Ade Mafia (whatever his name was) and beat Sullivan by 20 metres at Central Park in a fun day. (all the union lads chickened out)

Yes Brian Bevan must have been quick.
Bald 'streamlined' head, spindly legs and a body to match, Wires top scorer. Must have been a scortcher not to get caught!

Brian Bevan was extremely fast wearing soggy rugby boots. Remember he played in the "good old days" of winter rugby. They reckon he could do under 10 secs wearing boots! I saw him a few times towards the end of his playing days and he still had lightening acceleration and reaction.
I wish I had seen him in his pomp. My Dad idealised him even though he supported Whitehaven and 'Town. Whenever Workington played The Wire their crowd went up just to see The Bev. He once scored a try at Workington from under his own sticks which had the Town supporters giving him a standing ovation!! He had just scored against them!! Imagine that these days?

Irvine from Aus always seemed fast to me

Short distances? Fielding of Salford and I bet Nicky Stanton/Sean Ainscough are rapid over 40 metres

Robinson the fastest over 40 meters out of everybody though.
I'd agree with that, around 30-40 metres out, no-one was quicker to my mind.

Over the full 100 metres though, I would have to say Offiah over Preston. Martin was taller, and as such this gave him greater leg stride, plus he always appeared to be a "smoother" runner.

At the moment, the numerous young Leeds wingers (Smith, Hall etc) look just about the fastest in SL, regularly going over 50m metres or so for tries.

Greg Inglis in Australia looks v. quick.

If you can get hold of a review of the 86/87 season, you will see that Mark Preston was the fastest things on two legs. Full stop.[/quote]

You might struggle, he didn't play for us until 1988 (unless you mean the Fylde RUFC 86-7 season)

In 89-90, he scored 32 tries including several long range efforts-give that a go. ('The Wigan Treble')

Paul Sampson has run 10.48 for the 100 and played for our reserves
McDonald Bailey (one time British 100m record holder) played for Leigh once
