Giving the award to Roby proved just how ridiculous it was to have a panel of judges deciding it. I would liken it to when the journalists voted long for his 3rd Lance Todd trophy - they all wanted to be a part of a "historic" event; rather than giving it to the player that was most deserving and thereby by devaluing an otherwise great award.
Barrett was last season's man of steel in everything but name and everybody (including Roby) knows it
"And Martin Offiah, trying to make some space, now then..." - Ray French, Wembley 1994

Interviewer: So that obviously means that you're not going to St Helens and you're not going to Leeds?
Frano: I don't know why I would ever want to go to St Helens or Leeds

So I take it people will not judge him by cutting his stay a year short but on his performances mainly in 2007?
I agree with this I put him above Orr (obviously, Lam etc...) and so possibly would put him in my Kenny, Miles group of Antipodeans...
too young to remember Kenny being 4 months old gainst FC at wembley but I guess it could be a similar situation, in 10 years we can talk about how good or great Barratt was...
Rightly or wrongly Kenny and Miles are judged on 3/4 of a season at Wigan RLFC and Miles who was a genius had a lynching party after him in his first month or so when injuries etc = relatively ordinary form.
Something interesting. All the stand offs mentioned in this thread and not one mention of Steve Ella or for that matter Henry Paul.
Doug Stand wrote:I can't believe you could mention Orr and Barrett in the same breath... Barrett is an amazing player and I will remember him as one of the greatest stand off's ever to play for Wigan. Only Kenny would better him...
Quite simply he is an outstanding talent and it's been an absolute pleasure to watch him in cherry and white.
Lets be clear it was an absolute travesty he didn't win the man of steel last year. He was far and away the best player in SL - Ok this year he hasn't done as much but that's not top say he has not been brilliant - the standards he set at Wigan last year have not been seen for many a year.
Bazza will go home empty handed but it will not be down to lack of effort or talent on his part... had a few of the forwards raised there game a bit more then we would be challanging he could have gone back with a medal in his suitcase.
There is no question Brett Kenny is the finest #6 (and I have Hanley in that list) that I have ever seen at Wigan and he went MIA in the SKCC semi against Hull KR, the difference being there were enough players in 85 to pull something out of the bag - this current with the exception of Georgie C doesn't have that.
As for Danny Orr - please don't get me started... I thought my days of Danny Orr rants were over, just when I'm out you pull me back in.
Quite simply is the worst stand off I have ever seen play for Wigan.
If Barret was named in the starting 13 but decided to spend the 80mins stood in Greenaulgh's pie shop he would still be more effective than afore mentioned Orr miester...

The trouble with the Man of Steel award is the judges are all pi**ed when they pick it, they have a big meal and then a load of ale and then that pair of no***ads Eddie and Stevo start pushing their claims for anyone as long as they dont play for Wigan. I would love to know how many minutes Roby was actually on the pitch last season.
I agree with you entirely CP.A world class player, and lets not forget he was robbed of the Man of Steel award last season. One of the best players i have seen in the cherry and white who was sadly surrounded by a lot of players who could not read him.
In order to achieve legendary respect you have to perform against Saints and, as I said in an earlier post, I cannot recall Barrett even turning up against Saints.
