Matty Smith could be a good signing. If we keep Finch then I think this could work, Finch can help guide him around and he has the skill to execute. We'll improve his defense too I would think. Smith can take the line on and has a decent kicking game. With the rest of the players we have he could work out alright for us.

If Finch is going then I'm not sure Soward is the answer, I wouldn't be confident of which one of the two would really lead us around and I'm not sure about Soward's defense.

Well if Finch stays and Smith replaces TL that is a big drop in quality.

If Finch goes as well and Smith is one of our replacement half backs we are in trouble. Smith is a pretty average player and players like Finch don't do what they do just because they have a strong pack in front of them. Some of the plays a player like Finch pulls off are due to sheer class and are not on Smiths radar.

I am with Dave 'O' on this.
IMO Matty Smith is not capable of producing the quality that Brett Finch provides to the Wigan team.
Not the same leader, hasnt the timing of the runs Finchy makes and cant see him providing the same passes to Hock, Goulding and co that make us so clinical.
Its a no brainer with Finchy Tommy and Matty Smith.

Wikipedia also says Lee Mossop is set to fight the Klitschko's so it's a good place to discover exclusive news.
:badg: from Wiki
On 27 May 2012 he destroyed St Helens forward and cheap shot merchant Shaun Magennis with a single blow with his enormous fist and was subsequently rewarded with a week off. Mossop, also known as the 'Cumbrian Colossus', is now expected to fight both the Klitschko Brothers for the WBO, IBF, IBO, WBC and WBA Heavyweight titles.

Lee 'Sugar Ray' Mossop.

That's brilliant

Agreed Matty Smith isn't the kind of marque signing that will get all fans salivating, but am I only one who remembers Finchy being less than outstanding when he first came to the DW and the dogs abuse he got from sections of our fan base?

Given the form he has now proven and the positive influence he has on the team, I'd like to see him stay. However if he decides to move into pastures new then we're not going to find a like for like replacement. Timing of runs off halfbacks like Finchy come through playing on the pitch and training together over time, therefore whoever does in would have a transitional period.

IMHO Soward is potentially a very good player and I could see a combination of him and Finch working well, along with other playmakers like Sam, Micky Mac and Lockers taking some of the opposition defences focus off the halves. But if Finchy isn't committing then the club and the team has to make contingencies and love on if necessary, the key will be that at least one of the replacements needs to have a good kicking game which will really add one aspect that our game is lacking at the moment.

Also let's not be naive, Lomas wouldnt even consider a move to the DW however well we play and however many trophies he would win!!!

That's true, but Smith wouldn't be coming with Finchy's prior NRL pedigree!

Smith is a talent IMO with a great kicking game. Does everything needed of a halfback other than take the line on a little more.
