The signing of a squad of mostly International players during the period of the eight Cup Final wins also led to massive debts which led to the situation where we lost the ground and ended up with the Shareholders selling out to Whelan.cpwigan wrote:Wigan crowds rose progressively as they signed lots of big name players, played fantastic RL. The crowds dropped from the double changeover from winter to summer year and the departure rather than signing of big name players, internal / external power stuggles between Robinson / Whelan and the end of CP.
The history of Wigan RL has never been an either / or. It has been a combination of big name signings from union/overseas and home grown products. The big name signing have always been the big sell; look at Billy Bostons debut in a reserve match as a classic example.
As for the signing of big names from RU, those days have not only gone but the reverse is now the case.
As for crowds, they are now no different in summer as they were in the last days of winter seasons. The problem since 1999 has been getting back some that said they would never go to the DW because of its ownership of Whelan.
