What I meant by club starting rumours was if an unpopular with fans deal had been done on the QT with an announcement to follow much later, letting it leak as a rumour and then saying nothing officially, lessons the shock when it happens.

OK but if you were right all that did was annoy the fans for a long period of time so I don't think they are being wise if that is why they do it either. The denials and evasion just wound people up.

I agree with you, but we never know what goes through their minds. IIRC you and I were both saying at the time that as Sam's contract included a clause to say he was not to talk to other clubs that maybe IL and co had set the deal up. Others thought otherwise, but it was a long time of "the worst kept secret" and somebody had leaked it.
