One thing that does worry me, though, is the amount of contracts up at the end of next season...a high proportion of our "senior" players, including Rads, Tickle, Moran, O'Loughlin, Newton (?!).
Rads signed an extension to that for another two years when he kncked back the RaRa overtures.

Moran has said he will retire after next season apparently.

The club has said it will negotiate with Newton next year although current events might change that.

Hock is out of contract at the end of this season and I would expect Ticke and O'Loughlin to be made very good offers of a new deal next year.

Whether they take them or not is up to them of course.

As to the U21 you are spot on about the £20K thing. If they want wages of over £20K they will have to leave due to the 20/20.

It really annoys me that rule. Why the club can't distribute the salary cap money as it sees fit I don't know.

For the U21 players they have to decide do they want more then £20K now or do they think their long term career will be better served by staying at Wigan on less momey?

Most of the top sides such as the Bulls and Saints appear to have a full 20/20 as well so I would be surprised if the clubs expressing an interest are top clubs.

If they are leaving to other clubs for less than £20K but a few £K more then Wigan are offering they want their heads testing IMO.

I would be very sad to see Coyle go, but not too concerned about the others (save for Melling, but I assume he is staying...). Presumably our coaching staff is ideally placed to say whether someone like Allen is a better bet than Tomkins (my money is on Tomkins).

Good luck to them all.

Salary cap and 20/20 rule working to good effect then by distributing talent to lower clubs?

Perpignan/UTC/Les Catalans/whatever, and whichever NL1 club comes up, will both be looking at them, I suspect...or Widnes if no club qualifies.

In which case, why should clubs bother with bringing youngsters through, for the benefit of their rivals?

I quite aAgree, GeoffN. Very frustrating - the price you pay for being a "big" club, I suppose. :conf:

Hardly! The salary cap was supposed to bring about the distribution of established players between clubs, not make it unecessary for some clubs to run decent U21 and U18 sides as they feed ooff others labours.

When a top player leaves a top club he goes to another top club.

The salary cap hasn't worked at all as was mentioned elsewhere. The same few teams have won all the prizes for the last 10 years.

I thought it was a two year deal and I am only reporting a second hand conversation about Moran. Someone spoke to him at a Riversiders meeting or something like that and he mentioned retirement then.

Well it isn't going to work overnight, is it? Though, having said that, when did Hull last win anything? They have had Ewan Douwes (sp) and Briscoe because of salary cap restrictions.

Also, if this crop of youngsters is the star talent of tomorrow, then it is a fact that they are being distributed wider now than previously.

IMO it is only the salary cap that prevented Leeds from keeping McKenna and signing Peacock, for example, so whilst it may not have the result of spreading top players around lesser clubs it does prevent the very top clubs from amassing huge squads of world class players.
