Millward fumed: "We had 77% completion rate in the first half and 42% in the second half, and that tells you a bit of a story.

"They did everything better than us. They ran harder, they tackled harder and they chased harder than we did.

"But they've done really well, and they've won three out of their four games, so it wasn't a one-off tonight. I don't want to take anything away from Salford.

"I thought we made no progress tonight. We took a couple of big steps back."

Salford coach Karl Harrison hailed his side's defence after they bounced back from last week's defeat at Bradford to get back on the winning trail.

Harrison said: "After last week's performances against Bradford we spoke all week about getting a result this week.

"We made it difficult for Wigan and I thought we defended manfully. At one stage in the second half we defended six successive sets, which was excellent."

Harrison also praised both sets of players after they overcame horrendous surface conditions to reward the 5,494 spectators that turned up on a bitterly cold north-west evening.

He added: "We play a summer sport don't we, and for the last 11 years we haven't played in conditions like that. It was just a freak.

"But I thought both sets of players showed great skill levels and it made for a really exciting game."

The irritating aspect for me is that all the teams doing well are doing nothing but the basics very well. Nobody is playing harlem glob trotters stuff. Just enthusiasm, completion, low mistake rate. Us, we give the opposition all the ball and we simply aint good enough to do that.

Personally, I think we have expected too much from the lads think they are only just bonding.
If you think expectng a win against Salford is expecting too much you can't have much expectation of this team. The teams performance so far bar 40 mins v Hudss is a disgrace and way below what we should be expecting and areentitled to.

Not bonded? They have been training sinceOctoberlast year most of them. That is no excuse. They are highly paid professional players who are currently stealing a living.

The results speak for themselves.

There can be no excuses for a Wigan side getting one win form three and being outlcassed by Salford who as someone said, are a bunch of cast offs and second string Aussies.

We should not still be waiting for the team to come together. Every other team in the league looks to have come together except us who are going backwards which and saying that is the only thing Millward got right tonight.

The substitutions show panic on his part. Playing people out of position during the game is stupid. Playing a back as a forward is stupid.

He lost the plot and so did the players. Individual bits of good play mean nothing. It is a team game.

The side isn't good enough and will not win anything this season unless a miracle occurs.

I think that Millward sounds angry. Plus, why do we have to put up with another idiiot of a referee in Kirkpatrick?? I hate the guy!!!!! I'll bet he didn't give Wigan much either. I also bet that knowing Kirkpatrick, most of the 50/50 decisions would have gone against Wigan.

Stop going on about rhe ref. It isn't his fault we can't score, drop the bal or leak about 30 points a game.

The referee is not the issue. I think I am right in saying that everybody expects a top 5 finish this season. At this rate, the team are going to make it incredibly difficult for themselves.

What we desperately need is some consistency of selection. We have got to get our team functioning. Yes, they are new but as Dave O points out so are many other teams.

The ref had now't to do with it, except perhaps he should have given another try to Salford when we knocked on 5 yards off our line but he called the Salford player back for the scrum instead of letting him score.

Our completion rate was appalling, Salford just seemed to handle the conditions better than us. Lockers we missed, he's got a groin injury, but it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what went wrong. Our kicking game was generally better (Brown apart, once again shouldn't be allowed near boot and ball), we did some decent passing, but Salford made more distance than us to put us under pressure. I think our defence again needs to be questioned, despite much improved performances from the likes of Calderwood. Ashton was very good again, but one of the few positives. Last tackle options are also still lacking, we had lots of sets close to their line but didn't do anything useful with the possession. Very frustrating, and I can't see how to fix things.
