No matter how many times I hear this kind of thing, no-one's ever come up with a shred of evidence to support the rumour. When the Latics were in the lower divisions, did he keep them out of the stadium despite them only attracting a couple of thousand fans (the scenario we might face if relegated)? How much money will come into the JJB stadium in the summer if we're not playing there? Why did he make a song and dance about both teams having his full support and access to his money for as long as he's living, when talking about the various officials taking up additional jobs with the other team? Why does he continue to put money into the team if he's not interested? And as for Maurice, he's a big name in a small sport at the moment - whether or not you like the man and what he's done for Wigan and for RL generally, everyone knows his name. In soccer he's going to be just another club official, hardly going to attract the profile of your Glaziers, Abramovich's, Ellis', Shepherds etc. I'm pretty sure Maurice's ego will want him to still think he's important and famous, and I can't see him achieving that if he completely gives up the rugby for the Latics. Maybe I read the guy wrongly, but it's always seemed important for Maurice to think people are listening to him, even if he's not saying much of significance.Cuculus Canorus Warrior posted:
I think your reet Horsey.
If relegation beckons, then my guess he will amalgamate us with Orrell, sell them both or some dodgey deal and we move out of the JJB. Leaving the Cuckoo Latics in their beloved nest.

Re: lindsay with latics
Fraggle, we are small potatoes mate. DW kept Latics going with the sole intention of getting them to where they are now.
IMO we are drifting from being a tenant who is no longer welcome to an out and out nuisance to the real power at Wigan, namely Latics.
You mention the income from the Rugby attendances. I respond with the fact that DW doesn't need our money. In terms of his sporting affiliations and ambitions we could not be surprised if his focus is on Latics. Financially they are huge and we are nowhere.
Looking at the lack of strategic planning at Wigan. Poor signings, constant upheaval, etc. We are existing at the moment as an afterthought to the main event.

Look at it from whelans point of view. How many matches will the rugby attract with attendances over 18 000 and how many matches with less than 12,000. Then look at the football He is a business man and though it pains to say it top level football is were the money is

Okay Nathan, you bury your head in the sand !
Here's one fact; the revenue from TV appearances alone for the Latics this season, will amass to £20 million plus.
Speaks for itself really.

Re: lindsay with latics
it all boils down to if DW is thinking long or short term, will latics still be in the top flight in say ten years? i have no idea, but i would bet that the rugby will be still/or be back
in the top flight with a average of 10/14,000.

Re: lindsay with latics
A very good point. If the Latics get relegated next season, and we've already gone, Whelan is left with a stadium that he can't fill. We know that many fans are fickle, and just because they went to watch the Latics in the Premiership they won't be there when the 1st division comes calling (whatever it's called this week). He needs us there, he's always needed us there and I doubt a season or two of Premiership soccer will make a difference. If the Latics stay there for 10 years, then good luck to them, but sport's a bit unpredictable (look at our plight!) and who's to say what will happen next year.bamber posted:

Re: lindsay with latics
But do we cost him anything to be there? Apart from the fact the pitch is being played on 12 months of the year (and ignoring the fact that it looks better after 4 months of rugby come August than it does after several months of soccer), what does he lose by having two teams using the stadium? We might be small fry, I'm not going to dispute that, but Whelan's put a lot of money into our team and a lot of money into Superleague - he didn't need to do any of that if he's not interested in us. I don't suppose our current poor position is really affecting him either, most people outside the club still associate Wigan RLFC with Maurice Lindsay rather than Dave Whelan.jinkin jimmy posted:

Re: lindsay with latics
In terms of turnover, perhaps, but the important figure in any accounts is the profit, and most soccer clubs, Latics included, run at a loss.jerseyman posted:

The most recent Latics accounts show a loss of £11 million - and that's before they were paying Premiership wages. Even with the Sky money, I doubt they'll make a profit this year either.
