But wiganers cannot complain about anybody calling them pie eaters. you must remember the wembley cup finals in 1984 and 85 where every wigan banner had a picture of a pie on it, and banners like 'never mind the pies, how about some tries' and all the jokes about wigan wedding cakes aswell. wiganers have embraced that nickname and turned it around. i think the offensive part of that name dies a very long time ago. after all we are talking about the strike in 1929

BTW I think you'll find few people outside of Wigan (or indeed inside it) know of the origins of Pie-eaters. Most people think it is because we have a lot of pie shops or eat a lot of pies!?! I sort of suspect that PNB falls into this latter group!
