But in the "real world" employees are sacked (eventually, after going through a long and tortuous disciplinary procedure) if they aren't doing their job...and aspects of "performance" are normally built into any contract/terms of employment.
I was curious as to what would happen if I went to work each day and did absolutely nothing, so I asked my manager. He told me that after a few weeks someone would notice, then I would get counselled (if I attended the sessions). We guessed it would take nine months before I'd actually be sacked.

Richards must be on a decent contract and realistically if he is not likely to get a place then we would we advised to let him go - as we can't afford to waste a 20/20 place or salary cap money.
I disagree. We canonly have 17 players in the game but we need the three who make up the rest of the top 20 players to be good players which means a decent contract for them.
We also need those three players to be professional about it if they are not in the team. Noble said Calderwood was in the U21 a few weeks back and stuck at it and that now Richards must do some work to earn his place in the side. This is the result of competition for places - the ideal situation if the players will accept itwhich they should.
Obviously with Dallas leaving next year we will need another winger - whether this is Richards or not remains to be seen. However rumours have persisteed that his wife is unhappy and that must be a factor too.
The homesick thing is a no brainer. If that is a serious problem for them then they will go home but I'd hope the club would try and help out there. But as you say Dallas is off next deason so Richards ought to know the opportunity is there for him and so he should do his best and show Nobby he is the man for the job.
I think that DV will be "released" at the end of the year; along with a couple of other players - in his latest interview Noble said that he is planning to bring in more players for next year so space has to be made - I just hope he doesn't let Godwin go.
If Godwin wants to stay which he said he does, give him a new deal. I think DV's contract is up (although I did think it was four, not three years but someonesaood it was three) so he wil be off IMO.

DV's contract was 3 years from July '04, so another year yet, I'm afraid - although we've recently seen enough examples that contracts aren't worth the blood they're signed in.
