Hook is great but there are plenty other talents around, as you rightly assert not many of them on display this year, very poor year from all the Northern Hemisphere sides, if New zealand don't win the World Cup this time there must be an Australian God
But i dont think this Ireland side is a good one the competition has gone backwards since 2003 and the standard of play is poor. Ireland could win the competition but none of there players are good enough to play in SL. O Driscoll 2-3 seasons ago was hes not the same player as he was then.Doug Stand posted:I disagree that with that.thegimble posted:
Only 1 player in the entire six nations for me has any real ability.
Hook from Wales hes a great player with ball in hand and is a great kicker.
This years 6 nations has been a poor one by a long way.
Horgan, Hickie, O'Driscoll, Darcy, O'Gara O'Connell, Leamey are amongst if not the best in the world at the moment. Any of those boys would do well playing league. The only player that wouldn't get into Wigan's current squad from that list would be O'Gara. Assumming Barret can stay fit. O'Gara is a wonderful stand-off in Union, probably #2 in the world... but his game does suit Union not league.
Although I will admit the 6 nations didn't hit the standards of the Autumn internationals.
As for others there are many, I'd still have Robinson back, Wilkinson would easily make it in league, about 10 of the All-Blacks. It's unfortunate, the tide has turned now, it used to be the Union greats coming to league, now its reversing.
What i meant was they arent a very good side and only a decent side as they have no real competition apart from France in the NH. As i said before ive seen most of the games in work and the standard is poor it seems no side apart from the top 2 have any ability to open sides up.Doug Stand posted:You contradict yourself there, your opening sentance says that Ireland are not good but you going on to summerise that they are?thegimble posted:

Its easy to look good against mediocre sides which Ireland have in the 6 nations this year.
England - Poor/bad
Scotland - Bad
France - Good/average
Ireland - Good
Italy - Average
Wales - Very bad
The competition is a shadow of what it was. Maybe it was England that drove the standard up pre 2003 and others followed. Since 2003 its gone down.
anyway, I see what you are saying and well I completely disagree. The current Ireland side is a great side.
You know it does read bad that when you say that England drove up the standard when they were at their peak, now they are a poor team ( a very poor team) and Ireland are the team to beat suddenly the whole standard is bad???
Oh dear!
I can't believe anyone would say that.
Ok, so yes opposition has been bad and sometimes England game aside Ireland haven't been as convincing as they would like, but let me remind you of how they swept suposidly World Cup contenders aside in the Autumn. Now four months on, they are not that great.
Munster are the current European champions, it coud quite easily have been Leinster. Munster again have it in their own hands. It;s theirs to lose.
So Ireland team, best in Europe, 2nd best in the world...
but all the other teams are now poor.... oh dear
