The fear/desire to see if Wigan RLFC were relegated created an excitement/a frenzy. The result was everything. Nobody had any great expectations other than we must not be relegated.

Times have moved on. Expectations have rose. Wigan RLFC are now expected to be competitive in every match, play decent rugby league and be a top 4 club. So when peoples expectations are heightened then the fall is that much further/tougher.

I personally came out and started the humble pie threads because it was a lesson. A lesson that no matter what some fans are able to remain positive and believe. I hold my hands up and say that I cannot. I get more nervous watching Wigan than anything else. I also get a huge adrenalin rush. I nearly passed out (no joke) when Calders scored the winner at Headingley last year.

I think when you are sceptical you have to hold your hands up and say you know what you were right and I was wrong. The really positive fans have my admiration. They can never be knocked down. Me, emotionally supporting Wigan is a roller coaster. I wish it was not but it is and it always will be.
I find it more enjoyable now, in a way. It was almost getting boring when we were winning everything.

I'm one of the always positive crowd; even during a game that we're behind I always think we'll come back and win.

I agree Geoff re success becomes sour although to be fair it took a number of years for that to happen lol so I can withstand 2 or 3 years of it now. When you are successful I think what happens is the players/team have to pull rabbits out of hats to keep fans satisfied.

I suppose my problem is I can smell defeat. At Watersheddings I sensed defeat was possible from the early stages. It happened. Yet there was a fan nearby who was saying stop worrying we will be fine and I kept thinking no we will not. I do think at the game itself you can often tell very early whether or not the team will win/lose. Interestingly, you can sometimes tell when the players pull in on acoach etc. Always remember Hull KR at Elland Road in 85, the KR players looked afraid and as if the world was about to end.

Older, more sensible (just) I now keep quiet re my views during matches. I hate the fans who sit nearby and have to communicate their views to everybody within the surrounding seats. The worst onesare the ones who hate a particular player and/or criticise that player/the team irerespective of whether we are winning/losing playing well/bad etc.

I too have noticed a lot of that, I don't claim to go to every game (it involves a full day off work each Friday game) but it seems to me that some people go Just to moan about a particular player, or as you mention, the team as a whole, and are never happy , win or lose. There is always something else the team could have done better.

It all kicked off from the Stains game when we were out played on the day showing little in enthusiasm. I stayed positive defended the team and coaches and we came up trumps, despite my close loss prediction, i let my head rule my heart in that moment of decision and it was a wrong one, but still a positive prediction despite Leeds form in the league.

You say you hate people voicing there opinion to everyone around C.P, well you will hate me near you because i do this and repeat myself to make it worse, its all directed at the refferes, video reff or a bad play tho.
But i dont meen to be loud its because im just a vocal person at matches in general, oh and i seem to develop torrets syndrome for some reason so ear muffs are required.

My fave commentary at the moment is "give it, give it, GIVE IT, YEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH" followed by put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Its the ones who you can be winning 70-0 and they are still whining God that really irk. You get used to it. It has always happened. I can recall Wigan fans who said Edwards was rubbish, would criticise Offiah for his defence after he had run in a 90 yarder and so on.

Sounds very much like me! I'm always positive towards the players (well, almost always!), but there's always the need to try and educate the referee!

I remember the criticism of Edwards, he came back far too early from a serious knee injury after a tour "down under" (1988 if I remember). The criticism at that time was justified - he clearly was not fit and was a liability to the side. However, wanton criticism of players for criticism sake - rubbish! Mistakes and errors were (as per usual for everyone) derided. Often if Botica missed a goal - we would shout "Sell him to Leigh!" To take comments like these personally, about fan's "criticism" (as it appears you are drawing comparisons with, is as puerile as God's "smugness" about drawing positives from Wigan's match against Wakefield.

Whilst fans may moan about winning 70-0! (I bet they were all round your playground at that time CP!). I doubt anyone ever took them seriously. Possibly you mistook them for "blown chances" that could have "set records" or more likely "won bets".

Even the World's best players under-perform every now and again, but that will not prevent them from the "name-calling and blame" reserved for less holier and righteous teammates.

AS is oft. quoted "you pays your money...." and fans have that right to vote their displeasure however they want. Perhaps the next time God goes for a meal at a "posh" restaurant and they serve an unwanted hair (or something more disgusting) in his food, he might like to think about his "positivity and smugness" as he swallow his pride and complains. Either that, or swallows the item concerned and remains "smug" in his knowledge that he is at least can never be wrong as long as he admits to nothing.

You perhaps? :o

I remember reading that even you thought that Wigan would lose to Leeds. So don't blame others, when they have your faults too.

I am not talking about comments justified or shouted in jest such as booing the kicker if he misses 1 kick.

I am talking about the supporters than never shut up, say things deliberately at a volume so others can hear and criticise whomever, whatever all the time.
