I'm with the "Mathers is no good brigade", If its a "no confidence" issue, he should be playing in the reserves until he has got his confidence back.
Wigan have been playing with 12 men in the team for most of the season, carrying Mathers, when he has been on the team sheet.
Why did'nt the coaching staff pick the reserve fullback to make a comparison?
On Friday night he did make a couple of good passes, positional play improved, but that was it! His positional play for that "up and under" was a disgrace, he never wanted it, tackling woefull, 1 on 1's, under 8's standard, he has probably lost his confidence but 1st team rugby is not the place to get it back! The team as a whole deserves better.
We have been spoiled by brilliant fullbacks, (since Ray Ashby in my watching career), fullbacks who put their bodies on the line, Mr Mather you are not one of them in my opinion.
The last fullback, Withers, soon went out of my memory bank, Mathers is not up to his standard yet!
Mathers any sign of an improvement?
Re: Mathers any sign of an imp...
See this is what I cannot understand about the Saints match. I can only presume people are desperate to praise Mathers. He never defused a bomb, both could have led to tries. The 40-20 would have been disasturous and he just watch it go into touch. Again he never beat a tackle.
