I think all the Cumbrian outposts are quite harsh compared to the Tourist Lake District. Heavy industry creates that environment wherever you go. Whitehaven is no better with AlBright&Wilson pumping out pollution. Ulverston, wonderful canal but an ugly chemical plan on the far bank. N.B Wigan is no better.
