Digressing; interesting to hear about Amos's personal situation. It's easy to forget that these situations can exist when a player moves over. I hope he is happier now and we'll reap the benefits.
What do we do Fred in a year, 2 years? Take out Goulding and IThornley and we are incredibly thin in outside backs. Our Academy Team played their first game of the season with forwards playing in the backs. Backs on pay as you play trials. We have umpteen back rowers but backs are like gold dust. If I was IL I would order every scout to go and find the best young backs they can to sign in 2010.
It's a fair and valid observation I've no doubt. BUT, what your suggesting (I think) is to persevere with Goulding and give him the first team place he wants. Fair enough, but I consider this to be negative and in many ways accepting of mediocrity; Gleeson is available and wants to come but hey, at least with Goulding we have a player who has another 10 or so years left so lets stick with what we've got. It's all 'what if's'. The same argument could be levelled at Brown, Robinson etc but IMO we've missed nothing.

Ideally, I'd like to see him go out on loan and prove me wrong but I can't help but feel he's an average SL player who's capable of fleeting glimpses of quality. And thats my problem, Wigan should have better.

I'll put it another way; would he be near the Saints or Leed's teams?? No, i doubt it and that is the standard we need to reach.

Put the lad out on loan and lets see what happens.

I don't really understand why you are comparing Gleeson and Goulding. One is 28 (29 next month) an established international and the other 21 learning the game.

It's inevitable we will lose some young players along the line but it seems if we apply your logic all we will ever do is buy in established players.

Keeping hold of Goulding is IMO planning for the future when Carmont finishes his career

He is 21 !! How on earth do you know how is going to turn out? Last season for my money McIllorum didn't have a good season. He looks better this in the games he has plays so does Goulding.

IMO he'd be in like a shot. They are good teams and he'd have the luxery of not having Smith to cover for or a pathetic pack in front of him.
Put the lad out on loan and lets see what happens.
I think the loan idea is the best one for Goulding now Gleeson has arrived. He might go somewhere where he is actually coached on how to improve his game.

I have seen Goulding since he first started playing for Wigan. He has not been developed. Wigan had 3 centres Gleeson, Walker, Goulding. None were developed and you can apply that to every junior virtualy. Shaun Ainscough is the Shaun Aincough the club got at 16. Did they ever develop his kick catching ability.

Does Goulding want / demand a first team spot. I guess he wants one. He must be pretty determined to put up with what he has. He certainly never demands it. Will he be the Wigan centre 5 years down the line. I do not know. However, looking around I know the shortages in British RL are halfbacks and centres. So any club that has some must put everything into developing them and keep hold as long as they possibly can. I am looking across all 3 grades and struggling to find possible successions in all manner of backline positions.

They have both tried to sign him in the past so I am guessing they would. In fact according to the Saints fans on RLfans Daniel Anderson tried to sign him as recently as the start of 2008. Goulding would look great in those teams and I am sure that he is now kicking himself that he didnt leave and stayed loyal to Wigan.

Goulding seems to be very highly rated by fans of other teams but not by a minority of fans of his own team, going by rlfans anyway. This seems similar to players like Atkins that get slated by Wakefield fans but praised by others.

Did anyone hear the interview on Radio Manchester with IL before the match about Goulding ,IL was aked the question was Goulding going to be part of the deal for Gleeson. His emphatic reply was that GOULDING IS GOING NOWHERE he is part of our future plans .He did not rule out going out on loan as he said that would be good for his experience. To repeat IL GOULDING IS GOING NOWHERE .

Here is a test. George needs a rest v Cats.

Goulding and IThornley can both play left centre. Goulding actually played left centre exclusively when he first came to the club with John Walker / Sean Gleeson being Right Centre. Will he play v Cats?

He certainly should for me, as I've posted on another thread. I'd pick him ahead of either Phelps (despite having a good game last night, at fullback) or Pryce (who still isn't ready!)
