But without Whelan, we'd have been playing at the Reebok or equivalent. Whatever happened after 1997, we wouldn't have had our own ground.
The original offer from Whelan was to buy CP for £4m and spend £11m redeveloping it, in return for 10% of the gate receipts. I was one of the shareholders who voted for that (voting was something like 7:1 in favour of it), but Robinson & Rathbone went ahead and sold to Tesco for £12m instead.

Until the JJB option came along, the plan was to play at the Reebok.

Maybe Jack Robinsons' opinions of Whelan had some substance, but his methods of denying Whelan getting a hold on the club were as corrupt as anything Whelan has come up with since.
Not many shareholders will forget losing a proxy vote to people who had died a few years previously.

It happens all the time in politics, have you ever seen the debates at the House of Lords?

There is one scenario that could lose us the ground. The 50 year lease is signed with latics. They go belly up and the stadium goes into the hands of the receivers. The team and stadium is sold to a third party. There is no guarentee that any clause in the present contract has to be retained. Happened in Oban with the Bowling Club. The project maintained that the club had to be sponsered by the developer. He went belly up. Receiver sold on but the buyer refused to honour the contract. He said the indoor bowling club had to stand alone something it would never achieve. The reciever is duty bound to get the best deal for the creditors end of story. If a mega rich rusky wants to plough in 200m provided the rugby moves who will win.

Personally Jim, if this happened and i was Mr Leneghan i would buy it of the receivers for a song and hoof the latics out !
Good thinking batman, that would wipe the smiles of their smug faces

How was the 12mil spent geoff ? Pay of debts ?
Essentially, yes. At that time, we couldn't even pay players wages, and had a £1/4 million tax bill overdue. Not sure if the exact figures were ever made public, but the debt was reported to be at least £6mn, probably more, and going up all the time, of course.

I believe that was part of the debt, yes.

I can`t see what the problem is really , within 2 years Latics will be in the Championship and within another 2 years they`ll be in the 1st division .
A lot more bigger clubs than Latics are down there .
They`ll be averaging 5000 fans a match that`s with a large visitors contingent.
The only thing that`s kept them at the top is Whelan and his money .
They`ll be bending over backwards for our money and support then .
The we can have the Billy Boston stand , the Eric Ashton stand , the Shaun Edwards stand and Andy Farrell stand .

With the advent of DW's extra 50 years does anyone know the actual length of the lease now in place, between IL and the owners.

many thanks
