Which of course, Brett Finch doesn't have!
Actually I think the limited intelligence argument works the other way, as you take what you are offered if it is good enough.
To draw an analogy; Let's suppose somebody offers me 50k a year for two years, or 40k a year for two years with a 'possibility' that I may get some extra work after it. The first is a concrete offer based on a definite sum. The second a much lower offer with some attached fantasy.
At the end of the two years I will have 20k more in the bank, I may actually in that two years be proven to be so good at my job that other offers come up. There's a chance they wont, but then again if I take the 40k, there's a chance the fantasy wont turn to reality, and I'll be 20k worse off.
So imho, the original argument is still good: There is subtle difference to the questions "What contract are you after?" and "What can we do to make you stay". Make the right offer and he stays.
Too late now of course

I fail to see the drama in this. All of the evidence suggests that IL really know what they're doing. No one on here knows the ins and outs of the negotiations, but it sounds as if we fought to keep him.
Taking the losses in turn, on Lima, I agree with Wane that we can cover his loss with the improvement in our 8 other front line props.
On Fielden, we get money to spend and lose nothing. Or else we keep him on a cheap as chips contract.
On Roberts, see Fielden.
On Leuluai, Smith is as good a 7 in our system, even if he is not as good a player generally.
On Carmont, let's see if he will go round again. He looks like he still has plenty in the tank to me. We do have Thornley and Gelling already as potential cover.
Losing Finch is a big blow, but it will be 12 months before we have the complete picture as to how we have managed to replace him. We certainly have plenty of cash to play with, so something is bound to come up.
I think we underestimate the improvement in the squad through their being a year older when we get doomy and gloomy about this. There's masses of latent talent in players like Gelling and Hughes that is developing each week.
I am loving this year, and can't see how worrying about a distant and uncertain outcome (when the people who matter have a track record in getting things right) is worth the effort.

What is the obsession with having to blame someone?
The only player Wigan have allowed to go is Lima.
There are alot of ridiculous assumptions being made. Without any knowlwdge of the situation how can you say the club have not tried? Look at Finch's record he has not stayed at any club for much more than a few years.
And using the argument that we should give him an offer he can't refuse, how many of these can we give out? Lockers, Sam, Richards, Finch, maybe we should have done the same for Leului, Hock? McIlorum? Could we give Carmont one to tempt him away from retirement? Ah, sod the salary cap....
Maybe Finsh just wants to go home?

thanks finchy
I don't see how you can blame Shaun for this. I think contractual matters will ultimately be handled by IL and I'm pretty sure Shaun would have made every effort to keep him if it had been possible.

Well said EW and Bobbers. Top of the league with 3 clear points. On track to sweep the board this season. There really is not a lot to moan about just now.
Let's wait until we really get hurt before we start crying. We haven't been let down yet!

Go on, shoot me down!
What about replacing Brett with Shaun O? Then move one of the up-and-coming Young Guns to loose forward?
I think there is always a big risk with 2 year contracted Aussies that they will go back once they have made their mark here.
Of course, as in all things, there are exceptions.

Now I am a big fan of Finch and always have been.It took some people a little time to see his qualities and are now sad to see him go as am I.However,we as a club have overcome many adversities players come and players go.I along with the rest of our supporters realize that the loss of both Tommy and Finch is going to be a big ask of our club to find quality replacements. Now I'm not doing cartwheels at the thought of Matty Smith but the one thing in his favour is that he's young and will have the close season to be tutored by the likes of Deacon and Harris.Perhaps he may surprise us as did Tommy.Because like it or lump it Tommy was seen by many in Wigan colours to be a bad signing. But soon learned the Wigan way and what we as Wigan supporters expect from a player.IL and SW will no doubt have considered every eventuality re the loss of Finch and in my humble opinion will find a suitable replacement for him.Much as we speculate on the contractual offers made to Finch.Non of us will ever really know the true reason for him to come to the decision he as arrived at.So in my opinion we should just get behind the club and the players because we have much to do for the rest of the season and accept the fact that he's going end of. Remember the dire straights the club was in prior to IL taking over because I do.And they where not happy days!I have faith in Lenegan Wane and Harris.I will be looking to what 2013 brings with confidence and a team that has taken a strangle hold on super league like no other club as done before.Believe!!!

I've been resigned to this for a bit now so no uproar from me, unless he turns up at saints!
My thinking has switched to being all about this year. Let's win all three trophies with the outstanding team we have and let those in the background worry about 2013.
As long as new players are in for pre-season we'll get it right next year. And if we don't, it'll just give us more reason to come on here and moan.

The fact is that Tommy is leaving after a long stint, George is retiring, big Jeff is leaving, Amos has retired and taking all those into consideration, there should be a significant reduction in the wage bill allowing for better deals to be tabled. Finch is far and away the best stand off in the league for my money, and that being the case we should have tried harder. We have another outstanding talent in Sam; we pushed the boat out for him and quite rightly so and nobody would argue otherwise. Brett Finch brought many things to this club that we will miss when he's gone.
That's why Shaun Wane wanted to keep him, and he made that point long and hard everytime he was asked. However, at the end of the day he states his case, and the powers above him pay the wages and make the deals. Whoever that was needed to dig deeper, and now we just have to deal with the fact that they didn't.
