I never said we would win everything, I said I'm going to enjoy it no matter what, win or lose, something most people on this site seem to have forgotten how to do!

Well said CougarDeb,I'm with you on this one. It's as I've said on another thread, people seem to have forgotten how to go to a match and just enjoy the game. :eusa2:

Do you enjoy watching Wigan get beaten and playing badly?

Do you prefer watching quality players or plodders?

Are you indifferent to the result?

As far as I am concerned there is no enjoyment in a game where Wigan are playing badly and looking poor. Your post suggests there must be. What is it?

I can't recall anyone who sits near me watching us get beaten with a smile on their face. Most people leaving matches were we get beat are pretty fed up. There wouldn't be much point in following the team if you are indifferent to the outcome.

I know to some people the game is almost secondary to the social side of meeting with friends and having a pie and a pint but I think there are few clubs who have poor sides with a large support. By this I mean if Wigan have a poor season I'd expect the crowds to drop and if they do the reason will be - people not enjoying the games.

Well I can't speak for other people, but I have been watching Wigan since the early sixties and I've seen some plodders and rubbish teams in my time, but it still didn't spoil the enjoyment of trips to such places as Batley and Barrow, no fancy stands, no large crowds but still I've happy memories of a good day out. Yes the result is important, I've been to Wembley and Grand Finals, and been brassed off when Wigan have lost, but I can get over that.

What I'm trying to say is don't get bogged down with doom and gloom, when we had a great team in the eighties people were moaning that Wigan winning everything was spoiling the game, so we people aren't happy no matter what. So lets not lose track that it's a sport not life and death and I for one am going to enjoy it come what may.

Crowds went up in the relegation year. People support the team for more reasons than because we are the best team. Otherwise, why not go support Leeds or Warrington because they won stuff.

I agree they do. 2006 was indeed one of the most enjoyable season - in the end. The atmosphere at the games after Noble took over and Fielden arrived was electric at times but that only happened when there was a glimmer of hope and the team started to look like it might fight its way out of trouble. But I'd bet my house that had Noble not arrived or had we continued to lose matches the atmosphere would have been like a funeral and crowds would have dropped off.

So that kinds of bear out my point. The team had something to play for and was playing for it. Bumbling around mid table with an average team is in my opinion is a sure fire way for crowds to drop off.

Don't think we'll be bumbling around mid-table DaveO, if only because the rest of the league, Warrington excepted, are mainly in a worse state than we are. I'm happy to see how it goes and hope we'll get a top four finish and make a major final.

You are probably right about the standard. The standard is low but I also think Wigan fans in general expect to see class players in the side and more than one. Lots of Lauaki and Smith standard players in the side is not what the fans expect or want to watch in a Wigan team. The novelty of lots of Wigan produced youngsters in the side will soon ware off if the results don't follow.

A lot hinges on Green IMO. He is a bit of an unknown and so I am already hoping he can add some spark to the side because we can't rely on Sam all the time and I don't see where else it is going to come from if not him. In 2012 with Tommy and Finch we had three creative players for the opposition to worry about. I don't think they will see Smith as a similar threat so Green is carrying a lot of responsibility.
