Of course, we weren't perfect - look at Gelling's decision making
I'd rather not....
- but it was a great match with both sides tackling themselves stupid - and WE WON! That superlative defensive set in the 70th minute was worth the entrance fee on its own.
That was brilliant

Wayne Bennett is not the coach of Wigan :hehe:

I refuse to accept second best. Why did we not win today by 18-40 points when Saints had no half backs and lost players during the game too.
The reason is there D was awesome as was ours, granted we let a couple of opportunities slip but I have already said that is down to Gells not being good enough, are you happy we can continue to improve from that performance? I am.

If you are as good at fishing with a rod and line as you are on here you will never go hungry????

Saints are the current champions and the team to beat , we beat them , we got the two points and now are back in the race and as a fan that has watched them in the glory years home and away for nearly 30 years now im happy at the way we played and are coached in todays fast paced game , we have the youngest squad in the league and can only get better , first its we only beat wakefield because they are poor and wait till we come up against a real team well we just did and won , im not knocking you cp not one bit but credit were credit is due and it was due today ! welldone the lads :)

They controlled the 2nd half for a good part we never got going inside their 20 yard. And they struggled to get anything going on us as well. Conditions dictate a game today with the weather was always a close game.

In 2 games including the GF Saints have only got 1 break on us and Rocky put Swift in touch. If we keep Saints outside the 20 yard area it will not matter who they have at 6 and 7 they will not break us down.

They still had a very good pack out today and we missed SOL as much as they missed Burns. So to say we should have won by x amount is wrong in these conditions we missed as much as they did.

Saints were never going to roll over and die not v Wigan, probably not v anybody but certainly not v ourselves. My point is for all their effort bar Roby they were badly lacking any skill playmaking wise and even in those condition we could and should have put them to the sword. Likewise we should still have been goon enough to beat them with 12 in the GF.

I am not a believer in 'Waneball' and as I have said before CP's constant mentioning of it, win, lose or draw is tiresome at times, however I do have to say we do seem to have to work much harder than any other team when it comes to grinding out a result. If Leeds played Saints today I think they would have won by 20 at least, not because they are better than us although arguably they are, but because they just seem more, how can I put this? more simple than us!! Is it experience, is it playing style, is it the coach, is it kicking game, is it that they are a better team etc. who knows? I don't think we have the fear factor we used to have under Madge and early Wane but for me that's more down to a lack of quality players rather than Wanes coaching, although maybe other teams are wiser to us so it is Wanes fault! However we are still missing Bowen for whatever reason, an international winger in Charnley, 2 starting props in Crosby and Flower and arguably the only true world class player in SL in SOL!! So let's not make excuses that Stains had injuries because so have we. But no matter how happy I am about the win, no matter how proud I am in EVERY player today including Gelling (as he made some very important carries at crucial times like a prop), there is still a niggle in the back of my mind, how good are we really? and my answer at the moment is 'not good enough'!!

However, I have faith, maybe blind faith but still faith and that's how I see it in my cherry and white tinted glasses!!

When we lose it's down to Waneball as we should have won.
When we win, Waneball again, we should have won by more.

There just ain't no pleasing some folks

Gelling is another whipping boy for some. The guy drops more than most, but he's a kid who's not come up through an academy system or had the grounding like the other kids. We got bundled into touch on both flanks today because both defences were on good form, but on that slippy turnip patch any defence would play it that way.

The problem for me is the pivots. George will be a great player fairly soon, so will Sam Powell im sure, but they are not the finished article and they are still a work in progress on a big stage. In short, neither of them are Blake Green. Great kick for budgies try though.

Forwards were great today. Particularly Moose and Club, and as a given nowadays John Bateman never fails to impress me. I really wish Waney would give Rocky a run at stand off

Williams was a big plus today IMO. His defence was fantastic and a few times he straightened the attack up with good runs. Whatsmore, his and Budgies party piece has worked twice now.

Gelling is simply not good enough.

Well for what it's worth we beat saints which always makes me feel better.
My take on the season is....... We have started the season under done, by that I think we miss Green, especially when Lockers is out as well. Williams given time will come good, it would be easier if he was coming in with Lockers and Sam still playing as it was for Green. It seems Williams is more at ease with Hampshire at FB. The timing on set moves is off, just needs time. It also seems very easy to over look the pack. Again we are missing Lockers, Flower and also Moose is just starting to find his feet after troublesome injuries. I was hoping Patrick or T would hit the ground running but again if the other things above where 100% then it would have been smoother.
All that said we are third in the league having played pretty poor. The "Waneball" stuff is a bit boring now to be honest. We play in a structure it's one that relies on more bodies on average in the tackle, when we do this well it also leads to an a aggresive in your face defense. The pay off is our backs then have to help out the forwards and we also shift the ball. This may not be everyone's cup of tea. It did win us the double and it should have won us the GF last year.
On a plus I think Tony Clubb has.made a massive step up and if he can keep it up with Lockers Flower and Crosby to come back and with Patrick,T and Sutton settling better things may turn out better than some would seem to want.

Totally agree with your comments. AGAIN and AGaIN we lack quality and direction from our scrum half

Yes today was a very hard game which we managed to grind out a win but Saints as keiron Cunningham said they played with no halves it would have been a different story had they had any recognised half backs on the pitch

that said you could not fault the effort from us today but I for one would like to see some real quality from a half back who can create unless it changes the players will have to grind out games with Wins like this which sooner or later will take its toll on the players George Williams looks like a great prospect

I'm desperate to see some quality rugby we need a quality scrum half and a centre to replace Gelling who almost put us in a danger with his silly air head decision making
Somebody like Joe Wardle from Huddersfield would be ideal to replace Gelling
I'm glad we beat Saints today but as I have said before the warning signs are there and somthing needs to be done to sharpen up our attacking options
