Our halves were very poor on attack tonight, their quality of passing is simply not good enough at this level. I am not sure what we learned from the Brisbane match, it was certainly not how to support the ball carrier.

Exactly, nothing being created from the half backs and it is not just a one off occasion as they play like strangers to each other, unlike the two Salford half backs showed.

The only player creating anything last night was Gelling which puts the performances of Smith and Williams into perspective

And we do need to sign a experienced Hooker as proved by the introduction of Logan Tomkins who turned the on its head when he came on for Salford.

Surely wane can't be that blinkered. Another poor game from both halfbacks. No direction or zip kicking game a complete joke. Played of park by Salford halfbacks one of which Dobson was only half fit.Sorry but imo these are never going to blend together. I thought Salford 6 Lui was awsome (i think thats how its spelt) looked like a stand off every time he touched the ball created panic. With weaker defences he will reak havoc. I think a pearl has been unearthed there.

Exactly, Lui is a Stand Off, unlike Williams who is a Scrum Half having to play at Stand Off because of Smith holding the Scrum Half position.

Even McNamara, selected Williams in his proper position for England.

Thought running with a hooker for the first 40 mins made us look more fluid and consistent. We played a good first half.
Mistakes cost us dear in the 2nd half with dropped ball all over the place and Gildart being stripped of the ball again. With such a young team they seem to be distracted by so many wrong decisions from the ref. That's something they'll have to learn to cope with.

The 2nd half was somewhere between a farce and a lottery with a ref that's clearly out of his depth at SL level.
Salford scored two tries and Wigan one when there were knock ons in the set. Tierney was taken out in the air three times without a penalty being awarded. We won in the end but so could Salford.

Have to agree with you Ted with first 40 mins running with hooker. Did look more fluid and went ok.

Tierney has been brilliant defensively if not lacking in attack. i would go as far to say that he has been better than tomkins was for us before he left in that aspect.

Brilliant defensively? Give over. You weren't at the Brisbane game then where he was actually not even in a position to be anything, brilliant or otherwise, because he was nowhere in sight defensively!

And as to suggesting he has been better than Tomkins before he left if you carry on coming out with statements like that no one will take you seriously.

Read the comment he says defensively better and be honest Sam in defence was not that great at times.

And he dropped him to replace him with Smith who put in a MOM performance.

Williams isn't at the races at the moment, there is no getting away from that.

If Matty Smith was so awful, who was the player in the No 7 shirt last night who had a hand in all 4 tries and specifically created one try with that long cut-out pass?

I've only seen bits and listened to Wire but on what I've seen, Gelling and Tautai finally showed why SW has faith in them by positive running into gaps and good ball distribution. With that new haircut and the running, Gelling sometimes looks like a born-again Joe Lydon.

Still not convinced about Gelling's defensive positioning (or lack of it) though.

Best to take the points and move on quickly I think. If we can win while not playing very well, perhaps there are better times to come.

Both Gildart's tries came first from a great William pass and the second from a Matty Smith great pass. So they showed some class but they clearly made mistakes too. As you say Gelling was awesome at times, probably MOM. I think the question people have is in a big game, a close game will their mistakes lead to a win or a loss. Gelling is the classic one; a match winner on the one hand, a match loser on the other hand. Much depends on how much defence Gelling has to do IMO.
