God, don't you wish we had Cowie now? He was my favourite prop at the time. Mind you, he might have picked up a few 10 match bans if he was still around!
I remember a Saints game where a Saints fan was mouthing off about Cowie being scared. Next thing, he was slugging it out with the entire Scouse pack!!
Brian Carney
Re: Brian Carney
I remember when Fogarty butted him and smashed his nose all over his face, and when he was going off he shouting to the scousers that Fogarty "was effing having it". I also remember the time that Cowie and Newton double teamed Brian Mcdermott, it needed them both though as he used to be a boxer when he was in the marines so he knew how to fight.jinkin jimmy posted:

Re: Brian Carney
My favourite "punch up" was Terry O'Connor versus Gordon Tallis in Brisbane.
Gordon fancied himself as a bit of an enforcer and hit Terry 3 or 4 times - breaking his nose. Terry responded with one punch. After being seperated (not that it took much after Terry's punch) and sin binned. Tallis was down on his haunches looking very sorry for himself with a trainer pouring water in his face. Terry was stood up, bleeding calling Tallis a "******* *****" (sorry family site). Suprisingly Gordon did not take up Terry's offer for a continuation.
It's seasons like this that make you realise what a great set of props we used to have

I remember Ian Lucas being given a bit of a baptism of fire by Kurt Sorenson of Widnes. One of your senior players had a word with Ian who then proceded to get stuck in to Sorenson at every opportunity - legally I may add.Matthew posted:

By the end of the match Sorenson was running away from him!
Thinking about it Lucas was probably the last decent prop the club has produced through its own ranks. We have always bought in our props for years. Cowie, Skerret, Platt, O'Connor, Smith. Our four senior props next season are all from outside the club yet again.
Lets hope Hargreaves and Prescott reverse the trend.

Re: Brian Carney
Funny you should start talking about this, a knowledgable older man down the pub was commenting on how Wigan haven't produced many homegrown props. Skerret from Yarkshur, Terry O from Widnes etc. One thing he was annoyed with himself about was not being able to remember the name of a prop from Aus, one of the first to come to Wigan from Aus in the 80's who apparently had a motorbike. Can anyone remember his name?
It was mentioned a few days ago about a rumour of Godwin going to Haven, well I've asked a fair few blokes down the pub to have them look confused at me. This is a normal Whitehaven look (hehe) but they haven't heard anything of this up here, although they have heard that Aaron Lester won't be playing in SL as he's too old!
