It is a sorry state of affairs and I have said all along when talking about salary cap and wages, players should be allowed to earn money outside of the club through sponsorship etc. and not count on the cap, with obvious caveats and checks in place that it is not just the club paying a wage calling it sponsorship.

By doing that the 'sponsor' will be keen to promote the player so as to advertise their brand, I bet the Nike dress that the SPOTY winner wore on the night was a sponsorship deal and she probably got paid well for it, if we could get players onto mainstream TV and their faces know outside of just when viewers tune into a game, they become more well know and it promotes the sport more.

its not rocket science is it, but by no means the only solution to getting players more nationally recognised (walk before we can run and say globally )

Scully i believe was the last player i can recall who will have earned anything from sponsorship with Gillette, so that must be best part of 20 years ago (early 2000's), so we have gone a long way backwards since then

in a world where social media is now so intrinsic in what everyone does, surely a social media presence and advertising wouldnt be too hard for a player to show as part of "add-ons" to their salary. i am sponsored by company X, and here is proof of the contract. I would say virtually every other sports person in the world relies on sponsorship in some way or another, whether that be as they are starting out, and its basic like clothing / sports supplements etc, up to TV advertising for national / international brands as they become more visible through their sport / success.

Until the RFL moves into the 20th century (never mind 21st) then unfortunately the players are going to be poor relations in terms of earning ability through salary or other forms of endorsements

As I have said on many occasions, unless the Salary Cap issue is addressed, RL is destined to become a semi professional sport acting as a feeder for the NRL and Rugby Union.

If I was a talented 14 year old rugby player in this country I doubt whether I would play RL at all. I would be straight into RU.

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet is hoping his side’s success - including the history-making Sports Personality Team of the Year award - helps inspire the local community and makes an impact away from the field.

The Grand Slam champions became only the third outfit to win the prestigious award at Sports Personality of the Year on Tuesday, with Wigan having also been the first rugby league club to win the honours in 1994, before St Helens in 2006.

Boss Peet was joined by Liam Farrell, Harry Smith and Liam Marshall at the iconic awards ceremony at Media City, with rugby league legend Martin Offiah presenting the trophy. And the head coach paid tribute to the town following the success, insisting that the Wigan club look at ‘how we can help our supporters and our communities, rather than just what we can take from them.

"Everyone knows that’s what we try to stand for as a club; to be connected to the community, rather than separate from it,” Peet told Wigan Today.

“I think our supporters have played a massive part in our success. Local schools, local community clubs, local charities, I hope they all felt a sense of pride in the team and the club having that success on Tuesday. I meant every word of it. I think that’s what’s special about our sport and this club.

Winning is fun, and it’s enjoyable, but if you can make a difference to people’s lives and the town, you take much more satisfaction from that.

“Hopefully having some success on the field inspires people and gets us on a platform where we can affect more people.”

The Wigan borough dominated the ceremony, celebrating the last 12 months of sporting brilliance, with Keely Hodgkinson winning the main award, and Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows winning the ‘Coaches of the Year’ gong, with Peet also shortlisted.

"It was amazing, and I’m really proud of Trevor, Jenny, Keely and their families,” Peet continued.

“Anyone that’s been down to Robin Park on any day, it’s buzzing with sporting prowess with volunteers, coaches and parents. It’s a centre of excellence and a centre of community activity.

“I don’t know why it is, I’ve got my own theories, but Wigan does produce unique sporting talent and success, and competitive people.”

I unfortunately agree with ,what must have been difficult for a RL supporter to say so succinctly and honestly. Let's hope for dare I say "a miracle " Happy New Year to you and all in the forum

Well done to matty and the team you know what people say all publicity is supposed to keep you in the public eye let's hope so.The Rugby football league . Should now be publishing Vegas on TV .Adds ect.

Apart from Wigan and Wire fans I doubt many other British RL fans will be interested In this case I think Television ads would be a waste of money

I think you're right, and the sentiment will be much the same with Aussie fans, most of whom will just be pleased that their team isn't involved.

It's not the fans that the ads will be aimed at, it's the potential fans....
